Best thing about JC joining in has been the disappearance of Tonka. Gosh, he climbed off that horse awfully quickly. All that bravura melted into yellow...

But the issues are not settled... still postponed, and they will linger until confronted.

Don't hold your breath, Jim. Since he has been given the opportunity to respond, and has not done so, Tonka97 has shown his true color....as tridacna pointed out.

Actually...as much as it hurts to give Tonka credit...He did respond

Tonka:
Hi John,

Welcome to Scubaboard! You have many loyal fans here!

I would like to ask you a few questions about Shadow Divers: The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II , published in 2004.

It is my understanding that the copyright is owned by Robert Kurson, and the U-869 Partnership, comprised of Richie Kohler and you.

Robert Kurson is adamant that all of the facts and occurrences present in the book were confirmed by you, Richie, and the key people associated with the discovery, exploration, and identity confirmation of U-869.

Kurson admits to possibly making incidental errors such as a few minutes difference of decompression time, leading the reader to expect that there were no significant errors in names, dates, who did what, and so on.

How would you respond to the assertion that you and Richie took credit and fame for the essential work, discovery, and achievements of several unnamed researchers and divers?

Actually...as much as it hurts to give Tonka credit...He did respond

Yeah, but to date he's not responded to John's reply requesting a little more info on his "charges"...(personally I never saw anything that said that they DID take 'credit' for it...I think the whole book is a testament to the people that helped identify the wreck.) I'm more curious about the rest of his questions!

He's probably waiting for the "break off" thread!.......

Don't confuse his bloviating with responding. Where are the 5 scenarios he mentioned?

. . .I would take the opportunity to challenge the veracity of 5 key scenarios portrayed in Shadow Divers. There are many more than 5, but that would be a reasonable challenge/response thread.

Nor has he responded to:

Yeah, but to date he's not responded to John's reply requesting a little more info on his "charges"...

The break off thread is here, so where are his 5 challenges / questions / scenarios?

The problem appears to be one of "someone's" perception that JC and company "stole" credit from others. No amount of discussion will alter that perception. There also seems to be a matter of jealousy in that JC has had a TV program and another career going in film production. Nothing will change that perception.

John's response to this is typical of him, he is a really, really nice man who takes the time to help others.

If there are ever 5 questions posted he will respond graciously as always.

I almost edited your post. Your "If" should be a lot BIGGER! :D

No, not really.

Question #2 for Chatterton.

Were you surprised when you entered the E-room (the climax of Shadow Divers, AND Hitler's lost sub), only to see a flashing strobe in the room, left by Will McBeth, following the aft access plan devised by John Yurga?

Why was that left out? It would have been good for comic relief in the story. (Yurga's solution to the penetration of the e-motor room became the only one used by subsequent divers).

I have consistently recommended that divers would be well advised to obtain and read
both Shadow Divers by Kurson, Chatterton, and Kohler and Shadow Divers Exposed, by Gary Gentile, Gary Gentile Productions - Shadow Divers Exposed

I will end my challenge to readers and John Chatterton with the follow assertions by Gentile, well documented in his book:

1. Bill Nagle discovered the wreck of the U-869
2. Mark McKellar furnished the identity
3. Barbara Lander and John Yurga conducted the bulk of the research
4. Harold Moyers ascertained how the U-869 was sunk
5. Chatterton and Kohler took the credit, then made a career out of reputations that were based upon a foundation that was either faked, filched, or fictitious.
