Thalassamania,
As always, I appreciate the response.
I do feel that the skills I learned up through Rescue would be useful in OW. I hope that I can help remedy this when I become an instructor one day.

I pose another question: Will these changes we see fit become the "new" standard? Is it possible for the "old" standard to reign again?
No I do not think so, the fast buck fix is in and there is no turning back except for boutique agencies like GUE and UTD, isolated pockets like universities, and scattered individual instructors.

The only chance is if the internet brings about the collapse of the LDS system and it is replaced by a club based system for training, that could make it happen.
Can someone confirm for me that the most basic diver rescue (e.g., inflating someone's BC and doing a slow, controlled ascent to the surface) is NOT a standard part of basic-OW in PADI or NAUI?

If the answer is "yes, it is not a standard (required) part" I say - HOLY **** !
NAUI: Yes. PADI: No.

You're not the only one who's saying "HOLY **** !"

That's exactly what I thought when I read your post...and then your profile.

The fact that someone who's a "Master Diver" thinks that INFLATING someone's BC is part of "the most basic diver rescue" and an appropriate way to initiate "a slow, controlled ascent to the surface" is quite scary indeed.

:shakehead:

You are a a very nice person. I left out the part about venting because I felt that I would not have to spell it out to a NJ Divemaster.

I'll be sure to PM you on this because my post will be promptly removed by the mods (I am sure it will be in a few second).

RJP,

How do you propose that one can make a slow, controlled ascent to the surface without any venting?

I understand that you are PADI-trained, and may therefore not be familiar with the concept. Should I send you the ACUC basic-OW manual manual as a study aid?

OK, so we're in agreement.

You are a moron. I left out the part about venting because I felt that I would not have to spell it out to a NJ Divemaster.

Let's not be so disingenuous...your original post was not addressing me.

You left out THE MOST IMPORTANT PART...don't sweat it. Now you know.

I thought that I really disliked you. Now I am not sure, but you are funny...

:)

I understand that you are PADI-trained...

Not true.

Just looked at the back of all of my C-Cards...not a single one of my instructors was named PADI. (No Patty's or Paddy's either.)
