Like I said, that's my best explanation for the urine odors near the lockers and such. But at least when we're pissing ourselves underwater, unless in a dry suit, most of it gets flushed away. And, like I said, that's ain't urine I'm smelling in the bathroom unless it's some really aged foul fermented urine. It just reeks bad.

One reason I love diving - it's not just that you can't hear people yack and you can enjoy the calm sounds of bubbles, but you also are relieved of foul odors for an hour or so.

I guess you weren't aware that when you dive, you are immersed in piss and poop... from the fish, the invertebrates, the birds and the marine mammals. Fortunately it is diluted!

Certainly not questioning the fact it is around the park and in the bathrooms. Most of it probably comes from wetsuit divers who pee in their wetsuits, then surface and drip all over the place. I'm quite sure I've contributed to it myself although I greatly prefer not to pee in my wetsuit. Since we divers are to blame for it, perhaps we should come up with a solution. After all, the restrooms are used by a lot of non-divers as well and I;'m sure if their noses are at all sensitive, they don't appreciate it either. GrumpyOldGuy makes a good point.

How about installing a few porta-potties next to the fill station. When I was attending the Hermosa festival a few weeks ago they had the new style ones. Very roomy inside, clean, and no odor. Just an idea.

what about the idea of hosing down the area every week, I'm assuming that there are fire hoses and sea water that could be available ?

Oh, I've had worse. I remember one dive off some nasty boat that "flushed" while we were underwater. But at least you can't smell it!

Short of banning wetsuits, I'm not sure what can be done. A rain dance? Some problems are just meant to be.

Nice idea, except the cost of have the service people come out on the ferry to clean and empty it would be costly and no direct revenue from the divers to pay for it.

They used to do that on a regular basis, but the work was done by SCICo employees and they stopped it. Not sure if it was due directly to the labor cost (with no return to them for the service) or due to layoffs reducing the available work force. I've also heard they were concerned about salt water effects on the bricks that are the substrate topside. Of course I'm sure 60 years of exposure to the ocean have done a lot of damage.

DrBill ... Wasn't it funny how when we showed up at the park early Monday morning that they were hosing down the area :idk:

Yes, D_B... I think they must have read your post here!

I know this will probably go over like a lead ballon especially when considering all the other costs and how folks feel about that...

But if there was a donation box sitting around the park to help SCICo defray the upkeep costs of the park, would you give? We can discuss the costs and value of diving in Catalina all day yet it's a personal choice to dive there. You either do or don't. I personally think it can be a fantastic place to dive - one of many fantastic places to dive in the state. Definitely there's room for improvement and while we can probably argue about the costs all day, I'm glad that it's an option. A "Casino Point" fund raiser may not be a bad idea.
