First, sloppy work by the service dept. They should have removed first, then sent back with reg.
Second, stainless would not have corroded from your use in the manner you described.
I would agree with the assessment of nickel coated brass, with the nickel heavily corroded by some cleaning process and the brass showing from beneath.
Nickel coated brass is a poor choice for salt water. Ordinary brass holds up much better. Maintain as stated in an earlier posting. Stainless steel is even better, but a bit more expensive.
Ospho, as referenced earlier is a mixture of phosphoric acid and sodium dichromate, and used as a rust inhibitor coating. It turns iron oxide (rust) into inert iron phosphate. I know nothing about servicing regs, but cannot see how this stuff has any applicability, unless someone tried to use it to clean up the snap. Really don't know what it would do to nickel.
