PAD MSDT I've been doing that and it's got me some leads some have said I should be alright finding a job given I get there at the right time of year

Basically you just have to keep at it. I get around 2 people a week trying to get work here and every other person you meet is a dive instructor ruin Cairns!.

You just have to be in the right place at the right time and if you keep on at the shops you may get lucky.

If you are PADI then try Cairns Dive Centre, Deep Sea Divers Den and Pro Dive for the schools but its very unlikely you will get to teach classes. Most of the available work will be on the day trips. You will need an Australian Professional Dive medical, Oxygen administration ticket and any marine qualifications you have (e.g. coxswains or Yacht Masters is the UK equivalent) will help a lot. Also you will need Australian Workplace First Aid (PADI EFR won't cut it)

Best option for the day trips is the big boats like Great Adventures / Quicksilver or Sunlover, but these specialise in Asian markets so if you don't speak any other language you will be at a disadvantage. 2 of the smaller, but busy ones, are Reef Magic and Big Cat. Call their dive mangers and follow up with an email.

All the big day trip boats have underwater camera divers who work off commission so again if you have photography skills and want to give it a go then try them as well e.g. Calypso (also at the Reef Fleet terminal - call Stuart Ireland).

Good luck :)
