When I was in Belize I was ambivalent about diving the blue hole. But the dive gives you a very special insight into large cave formation. It is one of my most memorable dives. Fast, deep and bizarre.

What on earth? How can I refute those who've never done the dive?
"Swim under the stalactites to get to the other side"? I'm sorry, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
"The Turneffe trip is more expensive. . ."? Certainly not! More expensive than the local reef dives, yes but more expensive than Blue Hole dive day, no it is less expensive. I also very much enjoy the Turneffe day trip and have been on it numerous times.
As for whoever said he was offered an alternate dive to the Blue Hole, I can only presume he was staying out at the Atolls and not in San Pedro or Caye Caulker.
Yes, either of these day trips with Amigos del Mar is a blast! They are expensive but it's one helluva way to spend a day.

Yeah, I felt the same way after the briefing. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I've heard the briefing many many times over the years, I've heard many divers of varying experience levels describe their personal experience and your quote from the briefing you heard, was never among them.

Well, I understood "other side" to mean going beneath a portion of the stalactite in order to continue the dive. English wasn't the DM's first language. Perhaps that's the difference?
Perhaps and as it happens, you understood the essence, though it is not necessary to go under the stalactites or swim in and out of them either, if you don't want to do that. A diver can easily swim along side of the group just to the side and admire the stalactites from there.

Mikem17, What are yall planning to do? We are considering not going because of all the destruction. Ecologic is not there anymore. Let me know if you find out anything positive

I stayed at the matachica last year and their sister resort up in the rainforest as well.
I ended up going out with Elbert and his crew at white sands and they were awesome!
I never got around to doing the blue hole though as no one else was going and well, that made my choice easy for me.
though now i'm wondering how everyone is after that hurricane

Island Divers is up and ready to go. Most of the damage is directly along the beach. Except for Palapa and Ramons, much of the debris along the beach has been cleaned up. Staying outside of town is a good idea. I am at The Yacht Club and the grounds are cleaned up and the pool is open.
