In the Netherlands we consider 6 feet of vision as clear water. :D
Navigation by compass is necessarily here.

If visibility is so bad you cannot read your compass it is (IMHO) plain stupid to go into the water. (Or you must have a very good reason to do so)
If visibility drops to zero during a dive I grab my buddy, use a tether line and we make a controlled ascent to the surface if possible.

I followed some classes in Search&Rescue.
One exercise was to find a object while blinded.
2 divers blinded tethered to a guide on the surface.
The guide on the surface knows the location of the object as it is marked with a SMB.
After some practice all classmates were able to find the object by following the instruction from the guide on the surface.
1 (Attention signal) +1 yank = swim out
1+2 yanks = go right
1+3 yanks = go left
1+4 yanks= swim back
5 or more yanks = panic attack
No yanks for several minutes means something happened. (Tether got wrapped around an object for example)

I found it very relaxing.
Just swimming hand in hand with your buddy and feel around while guided on a leash.
