Another great seafood option is La Conchita del Caribe. Ceviche is incredible. Whole cooked fish, your style, you pick the exact fish from cooler. Lot's of options. Back in a bit on 65. Nice atmosphere. You can cab it there and they will call one for you when you want to leave.

I believe that Parilla Mission is no mas.

They moved it to the same property where Casa Mission is located. You enter around the corner from the main entrance.

If you want a fancy night out they have a fancier restaurant call Casa Mission. You'll want to book for Casa and dress up a bit is recommended.
And if you go to either get them I highly recommend the spanish coffee for a night cap

I have never made a reservation and either I was woefully under-dressed or my usual sartorial splendor was sufficient. (seriously,I get it, but don't let the dress up stop you from going. You will be fine.)

Interesting side note: It really Mission, like the English word, not the Spanish. (Thanks El Grad.)

Right after they closed Parrilla Mission, we used to go to Casa and ask for the Parrilla Menu. It was way cheaper and you could get the lunch of the day deal. I have not actually gone to Parrilla since they moved it to the big palapa on the grounds of the Casa.

I do order the Sexy Coffee occasionally, more for the show than the coffee. But the drink is ok.

Comida del dia was around 85 pesos for lunch at the big house. Sopa, salad, vegies, entree, drink and desert. All scaled down from the dinner menu, but just as good.

Thanks for the intel on Parilla Mission!

Yep. As I said in post #13, it is on my list.

Thanks to all who have replied! Packing for Coz right now.

1. On our two previous trips, we tried a variety of restaurants. So far, the one that appeals to us most is Los Otates. Wherever we travel in the world, it seems we like places that feel home-y and totally casual. We thought it was cool that they had a few specialties from the owner's home region of Guadalajara. And the pozole! We could have eaten there every day. The question is what other places have the same sort of vibe and food?

Las Palmas on 20 Avenida (not Palmeras on Melgar, which is fine but not what your'e asking for) or Miss Dollar on 20, among many other places. La Sabrosa on 10 (formerly La Mentirosa, formerly La Morena, formerly other things) was very nice last time I went, and I'll certainly go again.

I'm a big fan of La Choza's Menu del Día, which they post on Facebook every day. It's much less expensive than their regular menu and very good. The place empties out of gabachos by about 1:30 then is stuffed with locals having the daily specials by 3. It's very homey to me.

La Catrina on Calle 11 looks as if it might be in a remodeled house, but it's completely new. It's pleasant, comfortable, and homey but might feel a bit fancier than you're asking about. I love their breakfast but was a bit unimpressed the last time I had lunch there.

La Candela also has nice daily specials that aren't on the menu but which they'll be happy to show you.

2. Ceviche and seafood cocktails. Where's best? We especially like anything with octopus or squid. In fact, to broaden the question, we'd be interested in restaurants with octopus or squid dishes of any type. If they fit the mold of Question 1, so much the better.

My all-time favorite ceviche is the lionfish ceviche at La Perlita. My wife likes the octopus ceviche at El Palomar and at El Coctelito (which used to be our neighborhood place before they moved to the malecón). Nobody in my family likes seafood cocktail except my dad. He likes El Coctelito's best.

3. I have vague memories of a dozen years ago of a street known for its taco vendors. Where is that? Is it a lunchtime thing or a night thing?.

65 Avenida and to a lesser degree 30 Avenida.

Seafood tacos tend to be a breakfast thing, while other tacos are more of a nighttime thing.

Check out Taqueria El Poblano on Juárez past the Caracol.

And when you are sick of Mexican food, don't forget the little shack Hamburguesa House you can walk past 5 times looking for it and miss when it isn't open. In town and also does 95% of its business as delivery/takeout. Opens later (7PM) and isn't open every day. Worth the wait as they rush to fill all the delivery orders.

I like their toppings, but their actual burgers aren't that great and their buns are really poor (as are the majority on the island).

Frenchies has a really great burger with a custom-baked bun, and they're cheap. La Antojería on Calle 11 has quite good burgers, as does The Pub on Calle 4.

The best burger on the island is the "house-made Cuban Burger" at La Casa del Mojito, but it's not on the menua and you have to order it a day ahead unless you just happen to luck out and go on an evening when they have them.

As far as I know, that's still what you do for the midday meal. We've parked on 1 and walked through the Parilla to the main restaurant. The Parilla was closed and we ordered the menu del día. I greatly prefer Casa Mission during the day - it was bright, cheery, and quiet.

We've never made it to the Parilla when it was open since they moved. It's among my most-missed of places that have closed or moved.

We have been eating VERY well. Some of the recommendations in this thread have been spot on. We had been thinking La Perlita tonight, but we were spoiled with lionfish ceviche on our surface interval earlier in the day. We defaulted to Los Otates. I don't know what it is about that place.

So are we going to get a report - preferably with photos (I'm a big fan of food porn)? Which recommendations did you try? Which were your favorites? Which made it to your "don't miss this one" list, and why?
