    DIR Scuba Vacation Gear

A question regarding warm water/tropical dives: where do you guys put your small stuff? DSMB, wet notes, spare mask, whatever else you need on the dive? I enjoy wetsuit dives, but really miss my drysuit pockets...

    Suunto Helo2 life expectancy

A bit of an odd question, and not one with a definitive answer, I know, but here goes: I've got a Suunto Helo2 that has served me well on hundreds of dives over the past five years. No problems whatsoever (knock on wood), but now I've started wondering: what is the life expectancy of a dive...

    Fixing gear to wing/backplate

I've tried finding an answer to this on the forum, but nothing seems to come up. Guessing my Google-fu is letting me down! :shocked2: I dive with a wing and backplate, both for open-water, single-tank dives, and for tech (and thus twin setup) dives. I've been looking for a clever way to carry...

    Thanks everyone. Really, really helpful.

Physical requirements of various training agencies?

Thanks for the info, guys. Does anyone know the exact requirements, as in, how far are you supposed to swim, for how long should you tread water, etc, for each of the agencies mentioned?

Physical requirements of various training agencies?

Hoping that the Scubaboard community can help me out here. In a recent diving class, we came to discuss the physical (fitness) requirements of various diving agencies, in particular CMAS, PADI and GUE/DIR, can does anyone know them? Love it if there are links to the place on their sites (or...

    diving without buddy

Solo diving has for a long time been considered a non-topic in the dive world, even prompting some to call it "diving's last taboo". But, as is also noted here, there are agencies, like SDI, that actually train divers in solo diving. And now even law suit-conscious PADI is introducing a course...

    Jacket BCD vs. Backplate/Wing

I agree with this. It boils down to the definition of the word "simple": simply in construction (BP/W) or simple for the inexperienced user, the probable target group of the article (JBCD). I'm for the BP/W option, BTW, having recently converted.

What to do after Open Water PADI

You've gotten a lot of great advice here. Go diving, first and foremost, and, if you have done your certification in tropical waters (as it appears you have), go diving in less ideal situations. Get some low viz and colder water experience. Get some experience diving the sort of diving you want...

Have you had to call off a dive?

I doubt any experienced divers on DB or elsewhere have gone through their diving careers without calling off more than one dive. I've been on trips where we've called off the dive at a specific site due to weather conditions, or called off the dive altogether. I've had guides call off dives...

Almost finished with certification. have ear equalization concerns though.

Totally agree with DevonDiver, ear pain is a warning sign, not just something you should push through or ignore. You run the risk of permanently damaging some very sensitive tissue in your ears. Same thing with the urge to breath deeply. It can just be a matter of habit, or it could be an...

    Insurance Question....

There are some non-diving insurance companies that also cover diving related incidents. However, the ones I've seen don't cover as thoroughly as DAN. For instance, they may cover disability, accidents and death related to SCUBA accidents, but will not cover lost equipment, hyperbaric treatment...

    Drysuit weighting

Sure, there are all these formulas for calculating your optimal weight when going dry vs. wet, but I've found that the best way to figure it out, is to do a weight check before diving. And, chances are you'll be diving heavier in the beginning, and then be able to shed weight as you get more...

Diving without an analog depth gauge.

I'm with DevonDiver, I dive with a pressure gauge and a wrist mounted computer. However, I am a recreational diver, not having ventured into tech (yet), so if my computer goes down (which has happened once), the only way is up. That being said, I do have a backup, a dive watch with a...

No gas -- what do you do?

I'm all for trying your own secondary, but my first instinct would be to get a reliable source air secured, then try other options. So, I'd signal my buddy, and make getting his/her secondary a priority, then try my own secondary. My DM trainer always said "as long as you have air, there are no...

    why hate safety devices?

I agree with the point made on disliking innovations that 1) are costly for the average user to acquire, 2) are not that necessary. If for instance the example you mention led to me getting access to information that I could in no other way get, information that made my dive safer, I'd go for it...

Novice diver with three questions... can you please help?

Answer to #1: have not gone to Galapagos myself, so please take that in to account. However, I do understand that there are both relatively easy and quite demanding dive sites, so it might be an option to go and just be selective about which dives you want to do. Take into account that it is an...

    Backup dive light recommendations

Just going to add my 2 cents as well: I use the IST T16. It's nice and compact, has an LED so a nice output, and features an actual on/off switch, not a twist-to-turn-on solution. Good backup, and not overly expensive.
