    Kona Wetsuit question

Hi all, Packing for a trip to Kona. We were planning on diving, but my spouse came down with influenza. He'll be okay to travel, but not dive, at least until the very end of our trip. So, we'll be mostly (maybe entirely) snorkeling. I was planning on bringing my nice 5 mm suit, but is this...

Middle Keys dive operator recommendation request

After 18 months, Mr. Potato Cod and I will finally be diving again. We're heading to the Keys in August for a week and will be based in Marathon. Any recommendations on dive operators there or the nearby middle keys? We'd like to dive Looe Key as well as the Marathon area. We like a boat that's...

Favorite Memories of the SB SURGE 2020!

Nice pics and hope the wind dies down for you all! Was there last week and diving was cancelled Thurs-Friday due to wind. I was pretty tired by that point and okay with reading by the pool, but always better to be underwater! If you're up for a walk or bike ride, the road that parallels the...

    Sizing BCD

I had a similar issue when shopping for my BC years ago. Ended up getting a Zeagle because the dive shop could order me an XS waistband with a Medium torso length. All the other women's BCs were too short, so when I replace the thing, I'll get another Zeagle.

How long to wait to have surgery AFTER diving?

Thanks, all. Surgery ended up getting scheduled a full week after my last dive, so should be no problem. I'll still ask the anesthesiologist about omitting nitrous oxide when I have a consult with her.

End of 2019 and thoughts for 2020

2019 Dive trips to Florida Keys and a LOB in the Bahamas 2020 Early January dive trip to Little Cayman. Then home to have surgery and a lot of who-knows-what's-next depending on how that goes, so remembering to be grateful for sunshine and underwater adventures with loved ones.

How long to wait to have surgery AFTER diving?

Thanks! I've got another consult in a few days, but the surgeon I met with this morning does surgery three days a week, so we should be able to schedule something that is at least 3-4 days after diving and still allow for adequate recovery before work obligations. I'm a pretty conservative diver...

How long to wait to have surgery AFTER diving?

I should probably contact DAN about this one, but does anyone know if there are guidelines for how long to wait to schedule surgery AFTER a dive trip? This would involve general anesthesia and the dive trip will be ~17 dives over a week (3 dives/day). I would assume it would be important to make...

Recommended fins for diver with bad plantar fasciitis

I don't know that fin type would matter much. I've dove with some pretty bad PF in split fins and did fine, but I didn't get them special because of PF, they were just the fins I have. But honestly, I think you'd be better off spending the money on a physical therapist (if you haven't already)...

    Why we dive

To explore another world. I'm a scientist on the topside, and the curiosity drives me. And it is beautiful.

    Primary or alternate donate poll

Well, I am going to die. No one gets out alive, I suppose. Entanglement hazard? I don't get it. I am agile enough to bend towards my foot and release either the entangling line, bit of wreck, or whatever. Or, inexplicably failing that, I can reach and release the back strap to free my foot...

    Primary or alternate donate poll

Ahaha! I'm just a rec diver with no tech ambition. My husband and I have been diving a 7-ft hose for over a decade because our dive shop is a big proponent of it, trains with it (though not required), and it just made sense. I like the backup on a necklace--keeps it handy and a girl likes a...

    TDAP 10 year booster overdue

I feel your pain--I've had seven injections in the last few months (Tdap, yellow fever, typhoid, flu shot, and three allergy shots). My trick is never to watch and try to relax. If you tense your muscle, it tends to hurt a lot more. Sometimes they can also use a smaller (pediatric) needle--the...

    General liveaboard question

Yup, I most frequently dive in the Caribbean since it is the easiest place to get to and works for shorter work breaks. Usually the LOBs have been 12-18 divers, which is not cattle boat numbers, but still a lot when everyone is getting in at the same time. And even normally chill divers can get...

    General liveaboard question

@Scuba Lawyer @Shasta_man Every LOB I've been on has been fine with divers doing their own thing as long as they have a buddy and there's no special reason the entire group needs to stick together with the guide (shark dive, current, drift dive, that's where the shipwreck is, etc.). Often after...

    General liveaboard question

I've done 8 LOBs and although I have always gone with my buddy/spouse, there have always been single divers on these trips who easily find buddies. If there's not another single on the trip, they get paired up with DM or other groups, depending on the boat and diving set up. In my experience...

What to wear immediately after a dive?

I throw on a quick-dry skirt and then remove my bikini bottom--and either slip into dry undies or skip them if I can't get them on in a discreet way. I don't like to sit around in wet bottoms. On top, I often throw on a quick-dry shirt over my bikini top, usually a UPF hiking-type shirt with a...

DAN and AIG travel insurance absurd response ; Sinking boat not covered!

Wow, sorry the OP is dealing with this. That's really surprising and just made me look over the trip insurance for upcoming travel (no mention of sinking, but my trip is not a liveaboard). I've never used my DAN medical/dive insurance, but I am the poster child for getting travel insurance...

    Exuma diving / Cat Ppalu

We did the Exumas more recently on the Aggressor LOB this spring. Like Damselfish says, there was some good looking coral, but often eerily few fish. The dives we did within the Exumas Marine Park boundary were better, suggesting overfishing is a cause and the boat captain confirmed this was an...

    Definition of a loggable dive

I don't know how to define a logged dive, but like pornography, I'll know it when I sea it. (Like what I did there?) But seriously, I tend to log anything in the open water, even if it is short if I learned something. And short dives pretty much always have some interesting reason for being...
