    Oxygen analyzer

Anthony A, The short answer is no. If you never plan to dive anything but air, there is no need to buy an O2 analyzer. You may want to invest in a CO (carbon monoxide) analyzer. You may want to look up Dandy Don’s numerous posts on this subject. CO in your tank could make for a very bad day.

Mask, corrected vision, looking for suggestions

I have a mask with readers from SeaVision USA (see photo on left). They can do pretty much any prescription or reader. I've had mine for almost ten years and they're still doing great. SeaVisionUSA

    Cozumel diving,what to expect?

I've been to Coz three times. In my experience, most of the operators will allow you (and some may prefer you) to doff your BC (and weight belt if not integrated) before you get back on the boat. This is especially true for the smaller "six-pack" boats many of the ops use there. Just tell...

Severe Allergy- want to wear gloves in Cozumel

I have dived many sites through the Mayan Riviera including Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmin and Coz. I wore my gloves on each dive and no one has ever said boo to me about it. I've had this argument on SB before so here goes... gloves are part of your "exposure suit" which is what a...

Severe Allergy- want to wear gloves in Cozumel

Just speaking from my own personal experience...I've dived Coz several times and no one's ever said boo to me about my gloves. Again, only my personal experience, but I've never met a dive op in Mexico that enforced any rules at all. Since the Lionfish invasion, many dive ops now carry...

How To Experience Narcosis With Minimal Risk?

I believe the OP was interested in experiencing nitrogen narcosis which usually occurs at depths >100fsw. This entire discussion seems odd as CO2 narcosis has little or nothing to do with depth. It is ordinarily initiated by either hyperventilation or a CO2 buildup in the blood for some other...

How To Experience Narcosis With Minimal Risk?

I'm a little late to this discussion and this may seem a bit simplistic, but if you really want to know know what it's like to experience nitrogen narcosis I believe a trip to your local dentist would do the trick nicely. Seriously, if you have any kind of relationship with your dentist...

    Personal Data On Computers

You may find this thread I started in "Ask Dr. Deco" some years ago titled "Why Aren't Dive Tables/Computers Customizable?" interesting: Why Aren't Dive Tables/Computers Customizable?

Anyone diving after retinal tear surgery?

I have had cataract surgery in both eyes and a U shaped retinal tear in my right eye repaired as well. I was told that, after a reasonable recovery period (three months for the cataracts and two for the tear), I could go back to diving. I dove on my next vacation opportunity. This was about...

    AKR Food

The OP in this thread was obviously in regards to my AKR trip report. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, but you know...life. The photos above are a perfect example of a picture being worth a thousand words, yet two people can look at the same photo and see two different things. Here's...

    AKR Trip Report 11/14 – 11/21/2015

There have been several interesting comments here regarding my trip report. One entire thread replied entirely to my comments about the food! I stand behind what I said in the OP. There were dive safely issues. As they did not set-up your gear for you, I don't see the relevance of the...

Dive Health: Eat Chocolate Before Diving — Really

Chocolate is one of the food items listed as things not to eat if you have frequent reflux (GERD). I can tell you, you do not want to have "heart burn," or reflux while diving. IMO

    Bah - Nasty seasickness today

Another hand in the air for the scopolamine patch. It has yet to fail me. If you put them on correctly (really clean the area behind the ear with alcohol) they should stay on through three days of diving. I've never had one fall off in the water.

    CCV - Malaria meds?

I recently spent some time on Roatan at AKR (my trip report is in this forum). I was advised by my doc to update several immunizations as KathyV was. He also said I should take Malarone as a malaria preventative. I took the meds (you start one day prior to travel and continue for a week...

    AKR Trip Report 11/14 – 11/21/2015

Captain Sinbad, I think you are missing my point. I'm saying there are those of us who want and expect more than raw whale blubber when diving in the Caribbean and that it is hard to find really good dive resorts there. You and I are not really looking for the same experience. It's apples and...

    AKR Trip Report 11/14 – 11/21/2015

No, you’re not seeing double. I was there that same week as Captain Sinbad. I promised a trip report and so here it is. First, to give you some perspective, my personal dive experiences have covered much of the Caribbean including: The BVIs, USVIs, Grand Cayman, Turks & Caicos, ABC Islands...
