Fish ID - Scamp Vs. Yellowmouth

I'm guessing that this is the correct place to post this question. So, here goes - how does one both tell the difference, and illustrate to another, the differences between a Scamp and a Yellowmouth grouper? I have bought fish ID books and studied some online, however, I have not yet satisfied...

Florida, Bahamas & Caribbean Reefs and Fish Guide

There is no Scamp in the "Groupers" section. I have the hardest time trying to decide between Yellowmouth Grouper and Scamp when underwater. I guess the debate will continue....I am certain that we have Yellowmouth in the Northern Gulf for which there is not a size limit. However, I'm not sure...

Dive Report - Ft Pickens 4/2

Dad and I dove late morning on 4/2. There was ~10ft viz in the top 15 feet and the water appeared beautiful from the surface. At about 15ft we hit murky water (~4ft viz) that persisted throughout the rest of the dive. It beat being at work though and we still enjoyed the dive. Interestingly, at...

    Planning Ft. Pickens - 04/02/10

Yeah, 3 day weekends all year 'round rock....well, mostly. As long as you can muster the energy to do anything on Friday through Sunday after busting your tail between 5 and almost midnight Monday through Thursday shoving a weeks worth of stuff into 4 days. lol. Still, it rocks. lol. Here's to...

    Planning Ft. Pickens - 04/02/10

Ok, so I'm sitting around and just can't stand it anymore. I see that high tide at Ft. Pickens is at 11:41am on Friday, April 2nd. So, unless there is a gail blowing, rivers are overflowing their banks. or the day is just too perfect not to take the boat out, then I'll be at Ft. Pickens that...

Vortex Incident spin off / Buddy Breathing

Heck, closed mindedness is a huge danger for life in general. lol I like that in this community, for the most part, people are constantly improving themselves and most don't have an aversion to a little debate in order to do so.

Recent Dive Conditions at St. Andrews???

Our entire household (8 altogether) has been at different stages of similar stomach or flu-like illness for the past 2 and a half weeks. We are finally getting a break from it all and seeing some happy faces for the past several days so hopefully we are in the clear. However, Saturday sucks for...

    Fort pickens

The fishermen that set up on the Jetties are generally used to divers. I can't speak for everyone but I have only had good experiences with the shore fishermen there. Now those that approach the site by boat have occassionally been a different story.

Possible death on the oriskany Nov 14, 2009

We were the small private boat that was first on the site that morning and moored directly in front of the Down Under. The distressed diver and those assiting him surfaced just to the port side of our boat before the current took them back closer to the Down Under. We transferred the Dive...

Possible death on the oriskany Nov 14, 2009

Well, I certainly don't want anyone to think I was trying to divert attention from what is most important here. I am well aware of the essentials and what really isn't worth worrying about under the circumstances. I just wanted to share the story yet not support its quality. As mentioned in...

Possible death on the oriskany Nov 14, 2009

Anyone see the WEAR 3 News story last night and this morning concerning the accident? I'm not sure they could have screwed up the facts any more if they had tried. It was very poorly done. Maybe I'm just grumpy after all of this this weekend though. You be the judge...

    Alabama Coast Liberty Ships

I have'nt been on the Anderson (Noah Webster) yet. I dove the Allen (William T Barry) a few weeks ago but I imagine that the hulls look pretty much the same. An online search will turn up pictures of one or two of the hulls just prior to sinking. You will see that most of the distinguishing...
