North Carolina diver dead in lower Keys - Florida

There is another side to this tragedy that was not reported in the news article. The young man in the boat was a student of mine that I had just certified the week before this accident. I can not imagine what he was going through on the boat by himself for so long. This was his first day of...

    Semi Dry Suits

I am in the minority but I really enjoy my semi-dry over my dry. I have been diving a Scubapro semi-dry for 5-6 years and use it at least a hundred dives a year in 68 degree water. The only time I go dry is when the ambient temp is very cold. My semi-dry keeps me virtually dry except around...

Who would your instructor choices be and why?

Rick Murchison for ANYTHING!! I have taken courses from Uncle Ricky as well as observed him teach and interacted with divers he has certified for years now. The only thing about his teaching is that you better be ready for "Top-Shelf" effort because he will give it to you and expects the same...

    new divers and rescue skills

I agree that there are a lot of things we could teach that would make newly certified divers safer to themselves and others but from reading the accident reports on this board the thing that screams to me is lack of judgement! The vast majority of incidents could have been prevented by divers...

    Watson Murder Case - Discussion

I do not know which shop trained her but all the ones I know of in Birmingham have their own pools for confined water. I have used the dock platform to review skills before going to the deeper platforms that are suspended in the quarry. Also, why do we assume that all her dives were recorded...

    Watson Murder Case - Discussion

Purely conjecture, but the quarry outside of Birmingham they did the dives in has a platform attached to the dock you enter the water on that is about 7 feet deep. May or may not be the same as logged. Hard to tell without dates.

    Interesting characters

I have had the opportunity to do a little hard hat diving on the side and have had a blast. Also, I have run into some real CHARACTERS! I would love to hear some funny, crazy or more likely, disgusting stories of divers you have known.

Do Commercial Divers need OW cert?

I know I am digging up an old post but just came across this and had a few things to add. I have certified a number of commercial divers in the last year and am good friends with a couple of company owners and have been told that they were having to get SCUBA certified for insurance reasons...

    Cheap hats in England

My brother was looking to get a hat recently and came across some on craigslist in London that were substantialy less expensive than in the states. These were kmc hats in good shape and recent inspections. Are these legit and if so why thousands less?

Scubapro and parts for life questions

Diveprof, The owner of the LDS that I teach out of and I had a long talk about this and the online sales when we first heard of it. My original reaction was very similar to yours. However, as we discussed it we both realized that the online sales actually might help LDS sales because the...

Is an SPG necessary with a wireless computer?

Considering I don't plan on ever having to use it and if I do it is just to give me ballpark of where I am it will work fine. Also, reading my pony guage is a good excercise for my buddy. Solo diving might be a little different, but probably not.

Is an SPG necessary with a wireless computer?

Another alternative would be to have a pony pressure gauge on your first stage. No hose but analog backup in case of emergency.

What is the customary tip for dive charters?

For a two tank dive as recreation usually $10, as instructor with students $20. Relates to help provided.

    Scubapro S600 vs. A700

The original price on LP was not a mistake nor is the current price. Scubapro drank the cool-aid and decided "if you can't beat them, join them". They are now allowing internet sale/shipment directly to the costumer so LP and other online sites are now authorized SP dealers. The flip side is...

    dive shops in Belize??

My vote is for Ramon's. I have used a number of the shops and all have been top-notch but the thing I liked about Ramon's was the casual atmosphere. If you want to dive great, if not lets drink. You could dive pretty much whenever and wherever you pleased. This worked great for the wife...

Jim, How would that be a lie on the form?

    Instructors, is this common practice???

Wookie, I understand what you are saying and agree with you. However, it is not applicable to Jim's comment. His #2 above stated that if a parent stated "no" to the concussion question then it ALONE was grounds for a no-refund dismissal. THAT is what I have a problem with. In that case...

    Instructors, is this common practice???

Jim, I would like to know on what basis you would arbitrarily decide to confiscate someones money for answering a question truthfully. The medical statement says "Head injury with loss of consciousness in the past five years?" If they say no due to the fact that the person never lost...
