Is there one book out there recommended as the "bible" of Scuba diving?

x2 on the US Navy Dive Manual.

    Backing off from technical diving

Me too. Wisdom is in knowing thy self. Forget the money factor, that's definitely not what's driving you. If you really loved it you are in a position to do it. We've never met but I find your thoughts and those of Bob (Grateful diver) some of the most balanced and interesting on this board...

Wreck Diving - St. Lawrence Seaway

I think you'll like it. Make sure you get more dives in similar environmental conditions first, especially your son. Cold water changes things in a hurry, from breathing, to mobility in a thicker suit, etc. So some colder quarry dives until you're really comfortable and not "ready to quit"...

Switch to Hogarthian Setup - Air Consumption Woes

I encountered the same thing, until I got my buoyancy and trim dialed in. Don't focus on how much you breathe, dive as much as you can and take a peak performance buoyancy class. The other thing that spikes my SAC is cold water, was the water colder than you're used to?

NewB BP/W Question - This wing for a single tank?

Agreed, I'm not negative at the beginning of the dive. I took a PBB class and dialed it in. Surprisingly, once dialed in, I ran my configuration and ballast through the wing lift calculator. It calculates 0.0 at the beginning of the dive :D I really have to exhale hard to get down, and it...

NewB BP/W Question - This wing for a single tank?

I'm not sure of the relationship between neoprene and pressure, but assuming it's linear like air, it would lose roughly 25% at 15 ft (half at 33ft, so half of a half at 16.5 ft). That depends on density, and I'm not sure of the density of neoprene. I'm sure it's closer to air than metal based...

NewB BP/W Question - This wing for a single tank?

It also needs to offset wetsuit compression at depth, and float your rig at the surface without you in it. He probably would be good with a 30 lb wing in warm water, and a 40 lb wing if wearing heavy exposure protection in cold water. Running the buoyancy and wing lift calculator is one way to...

    Random (but targeted) thoughts

This is the real problem. I'd bet that most on that boat don't have the knowledge to run through a dive or gas plan. That means they lack an understanding of dive science and its risks. Sadly, most of the major agencies encourage this type of behavior. Regardless of their written training...

    Clearing a steamed up mask

Try the lighter, and then Sea Gold before every dive. I don't do the baby shampoo thing because I wear contacts. I doesn't sting, but will really dry out the contacts during dives. I've also had chemical burns in both eyes from a pair of swim goggles that had laundry detergent spilled on...

The Notre Dame of North Carolina Shipwrecks - E.M. Clark

I assume you mean the Notre Dame in France, yes it's incredible. Not the one in Indiana with the football team, that would more analogous to being overrated only to result in a big let down :D Great summary and awesome pics.

Need help with horizontal trim, out of ideas

Do a good weight check with an experienced diver or instructor, even better would be to take a peak performance buoyancy course. My guess is that you're overweighted, fix that then your trim. Start by getting in the water, hold your breath and let all the air out of your BC/wing. You should...

Help me analyze a bad dive

Thanks for all of the replies. No doubt that responsibility for the entire situation rests on me before anyone else. That's the reason I took the time to reflect, writing it down in this post forced me to really thing through the details. The incident pit graphic is great, having a visual...

Help me analyze a bad dive

I'm interested in any opinions on a bad dive yesterday. It really ended up being a cluster, not from any major problem but from a series of little things that led to me calling the dive. I've been looking for a drysuit for a while now but I'm not confident on sizing, so what better way to try...

Calculating Weights for Thicker Wetsuit ?

What everyone above said. You can calculate the difference in wetsuit buoyancy at the surface by filling your bathtub with water, fold up the tropical suit, and put your weight belt around it. Keep adding weight until it starts to sink. Take note of the amount of weight it takes to sink the...

    Wetsuit compression

7mm farmer john is a lot of neoprene, I dive with a similar suit sometimes. Mine is about 32 lbs buoyant at the surface, I've tested it. Result is that you'll need a lot of weight, make sure you pay attention to your buoyancy check.

x2 on getting certified before you leave if possible. I dove with Bananarama last fall, great experience. Some really cool drift dives around Roatan.

    River Diving ???

Sounds like a very poor idea. And I surely wouldn't count on a tug boat stopping because they saw a flag or SMB.

What do you wear under your wetsuit?

x2. I wear these or a pair of swim jammers. Don't wear bike shorts, they have padding in the back end that feels really weird. It works on a bike but not underwater.

    Your Regulator of Choice?

I use a Zeagle Flathead 7 for my primary, and a Flathead VI on my pony bottle. That gives me a nice reliable backup primary if something goes wrong while traveling. I'm partial to Zeagle, but Scubapro would probably have more service/parts support while overseas.
