    Concerned about POSSIBLE HURRICANE MATTHEW!!

Looking at the forecasts now, it seems that Cozumel and Mexico will be fine. It's possible that Matthew could still do something screwy, but I wouldn't cancel any plans over it.

    Concerned about POSSIBLE HURRICANE MATTHEW!!

A better map to keep an eye on is the wind probability. Please remember that a hurricane is a massive storm, and that extreme winds can be found as much as 200 miles from the eye. You can find the tropical storm wind probability information at the National Hurricane Center. This next...

Trip Report - Iberostar Grand Paraiso and Scorpio Divers

My wife and myself enjoyed our honeymoon at the Iberostar Grand in the Riviera Maya in late July. As part of the excursion I arranged two days of diving with Ben of Scorpio Divers. I have about 80 dives and my wife just finished her OW. Iberostar Grand Playa Paraiso The Iberostar Grand...

Diving Advice for Iberostar Grand Honeymoon

Hello everyone! My fiance just got her OW, and we're planning on getting some diving in during our honeymoon. We're planning on doing at least two days worth of diving (she wants to get some serious all-inclusive beach time as well), so I wanted to make them worth it. Our dive shop...

    Head aches from diving

I get pretty nasty headaches when I'm doing classes in the pool, but when I'm OW nothing seems to happen. Could it be the chlorine? Also stay hydrated. That's always been a problem for me.

Indoor places in MD to test gear

Looks like you're pretty close to Annapolis Scuba Center. I've never visited them, but they probably have a local pool they use.

    Weight harness vs weight belt

So the general consensus seems to be that the Classic is a superior choice? I'm contemplating whether or not I should get one of these.

9 Foot Hose for Extra Tall Diver?

That's a fantastic. Also what length hose is used for the short hose?

9 Foot Hose for Extra Tall Diver?

This is correct. I don't have a canister light just yet. I think it's safe to say that the consensus is to stick with the 7 foot hose, and accommodate it as required. Right now it just naturally goes underneath my arm and around my neck.

    Best Fins

Yeah when I first got started it was with a focus on tech-oriented gear. I'm very happy with them, but the fact of the matter is that they're pretty much inflexible slabs of plastic strapped to your feet. I'm contemplating whether or not to get a pair that's more friendly for OW stuff. Maybe...

9 Foot Hose for Extra Tall Diver?

I'm also a fair bit wider than most people.

9 Foot Hose for Extra Tall Diver?

Nope. Right post, under light, across chest, around neck, in mouth. I'll just route it underneath my arm then. If the extra length is more for the other diver then myself I'll stick with the safe approach.

    Weight Options for Doubles?

For comparison I dive pretty easily in a steel HP100 with a steel BP and 18 lbs of lead. That's with the same drysuit and undergarment. The undergarment is the Pinnacle Merino Evolution. I'm sure the wing is way, way too big. It's Dive Rite's discontinued Super Wing (the double bladder one)...

    Best Fins

I have a pair of Dive Rite fins that have served me incredibly well, although I'm surprised that nobody else seems to recommend them. Why is that?

    Weight Options for Doubles?

How do the weight pockets avoid slipping along the webbing? That was my major complaint with the Dive Rite pockets. Eventually they found a home in my Transplate setup for when I dive a single tank.

    Weight Options for Doubles?

The idea with the aluminum backplate is that I could combine it with the v-weight to adjust things a bit. If 8 lbs of unditchable lead with a SS BP is too much then I could swap to an AL BP and save a few pounds. Here are the weights of the various options: SS BP - 5.5 lbs XL SS BP - 6.9 lbs...

9 Foot Hose for Extra Tall Diver?

I imagine the answer is "do what's safest and works best for you," but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience on the matter.

9 Foot Hose for Extra Tall Diver?

Hi all. I'm curious as to what the DIR folks feel about a tall diver using a 9' hose instead of a 7' one. I'm 6'9" and currently when I use my 7' hose it ends up going underneath my armpit instead of around my belt where a canister light would be. I understand that the logic behind avoiding...

    Weight Options for Doubles?

Hi everyone, I'm in the process of tweaking my doubles setup, and while I have a long ways to go at the moment I'm concerned about weight. Right now I have a pair of Pressed Steel HP120s (each is -10.5 lbs full, 0 lbs empty). At the moment I dive them with a DR Super Wing, steel BP, a...

How deep is the first open water dive

Congrats! Welcome to the world of diving. As a rule no more than 40'. In our OW classes we have platforms at 30' for the skills. What will happen is the instructor will brief you on the dive (as well as the skills you will be conducting), and then you will descend, conduct those...
