Etiquette of “NO, you are not diving with us”

Saying no is a tough thing, but when someone is turning blue from a neck seal or hood that is too tight, that's a pretty darned good reason to tell them you're not comfortable going under with them. I had a diver turning beet red on me while wearing a drysuit he had bought 5 years and 30...

    Nervousness

Sounds like you've had some challenging experiences. The best way to get over your nervousness is to dive more. From the sounds of what you have described above, it sounds like you've done some fairly advanced diving relative to the number of dives you have logged. The air horn incident...

How much experience to dive w/out others...

It really depends on your comfort level in the water, in each other, and in your skills. I've seen divers who have gone out and done their first dives without guidance the day after they finished their checkout dives, and I've seen divers who probably shouldn't even be in a group led by a...

how much do profestional divers make?

The question of breakeven really has to include what value you put on your time. DMing is more than just being at the pool / checkout dives / leading a group on a dive. You're there before class, you're there during the classroom sessions, you grade the papers, then you get to load the gear up...

Last few feet of U-853 bow missing....

Supposedly, it fell off... We dove the U-boat two times this year with Gary Chellis off Atlantis . According to Gary, the bow was still more or less intact late (November) last year, and was in its current condition on the first dives this year (April). So somewhere in there, it fell off...

    New mask prep

Rain-x is petroleum based - if you want to see what it will do to your eyes, spray some on a paper towel and take a nice breath of it..... Rain-x is designed to break the surface tension on water and therefore cause it to bead..... it's nasty, and it is NOT a defog. It's a beading solution...

    Child in class?

It's hit or miss with kids as with adults. I've had kids who have aced every exam and are more comfortable underwater than they are on the surface, and I've had kids I've had to help all the way through every skill in the course. Bottom line, PADI (or your agency) sets the age requirements...

    Divemaster Training

My Instructor Sucked.... he used to read straight from the manual because he was incapable of forming an independent thought or applying his 3000+ dives worth of knowledge / experience to the DM process, so I pushed him and got him to let me test out.... Did it all, effectively training myself...

    Close calls?

Shore Dive, off Rhode Island, three Divemasters out at high slack tide, about 110 feet. We misread the tide tables by about 10 mins, and when I and the other DM turned around to look, the other Divemaster was getting dragged along the bottom by the dive flag. Of course, this is 15 mins into...

Is your LDS listed with the Better Business Bureau?

You may consider it a joke, but it still provides a service, and given that they tend towards being nonjudgmental, there is a certain value. That being said, of all the Dive Shops in Connecticut, only one is listed with the BBB. ~W

    Prices for drysuit classes

My wife and I paid $150, and it was one of the final straws that caused us to part ways with the dive shop with which we were certified. Was told the class would be thrown in, and all we had to do was pay for the boat, not the case when it came time for the class. There's nothing worse than...

    Drysuits

Diving a custom Andy's trilaminate w/ user replacable neck seal, latex wrist seals, and the dry glove docking system (don't get it if you're a big guy - the rings you gotta get your hand through are mighty tight. I damn near dislocated my thumb the last time I used them). ~W

    Wetsuit for fat/big guys...

I'm a pretty big dog - 6' 2'', about 275, and I got the SeaQuest Isotek 7mm... Bunches a little in the arms, but that's the price you pay for lifting weights for the last 23 years... Otherwise a great suit. ~W

Will drysuit diving suck less soon?

Just like everything else, it's hard because it's new. Stick with it, focus on the fundamentals, remember not to pee, and you'll be a "badass" again in no time, except you'll be dry. ~W

    Washing wetsuits

I never use any soap or any detergent... I just rinse and hang. When they start getting stanky, I fill the dunk tank up to the top, get all my neoprene goodies, throw them in, and dump in a bunch of Mirazyme. Takes the stank out for good. Works great on your nasty, smelly sandals, too! ~W
