    Regulator Necklace on Primary

I tried the necklace thing a while back, but I really disliked having my spare reg hanging around my neck. Now I attach my octo to my BCD with a snorkel holder. My plan is to donate my primary [on a long hose] and switch to my octo, which is _right there_. I've also begun the practice of...

    Diving watches

I like watches in general, and I like to have a watch for all kinds of recreational activities. Maybe your dive computer is good for your dives, but a plain ol' watch will get you to the boat on time, is easy to keep track of when the divemaster says 'This dive will last 50 minutes', and will...

Replacing the Battery on a Oceanic VEO 250 (help me get this thing out of the boot)!!

In case anybody is still remotely interested in this [I have an old Veo250 I keep as a backup], the screw in the back of the computer/gauge housing will come completely out [you may have to work at it] and the sides of the boot will then easily swivel out to free the computer. I'm having to...

    Cancun

I was told a few years ago by a Cozumel dive operator that there are no diveable cenotes on the island.

Diving old air in your tanks

Just this weekend I was diving a couple of tanks that were filled two years ago. Absolutely no issues.

    Big Island - Kona

Just got back from Kona...did 6 2-tankers over 3 weeks. Viz was mediocre, water about 75F...I bought a Lavacore hooded vest to wear under my 3/2 wetsuit and was okay. I did one dive with Jack's and two with Kona Diving Co...then Three with Big Island Divers. All nice people and competent...

    Hawaii winter exposure

I've found a 3mm full suit and a beanie to be quite adequate in Jan-Feb diving in Hawaii.

New to diving and looking for recommendations for shops to dive with in Kihei HI.

This is a good point. The operations that leave from the Kihei boat ramp go out very early, and maybe even before sunrise...and you are on the west side of the island so it's very dark. It's not exactly a diving consideration, but you'd be wise to scope out the route to the boat ramp location...

How long do air fills remain useable?

I bought a couple of used tanks a while back, got them filled in the spring of 2016 expecting to use them in the summer...and they stayed in my closet til now. [work schedule issues and etc,] Finally I have weekends off again and will have a few opportunities to dive over the summer and while...

Challenges in your first 100 dives?

I was about 15-20 warm-water dives into my career when I signed up for a trip to the B.C. coastal islands. I had a 7mm wetsuit and a Zeagle Ranger BCD that I had never used before but was eager to try out. The rest of the group were very experienced divers doing some advanced/drysuit training...

    First Dive Trip

I've dived in several of those locations...you are gonna have a GOOD TIME! [I hope you don't get skunked by the mantas like I did last time, tho'] A 7 mil wetsuit is pretty heavy for tropical waters...are you sure you need it? Most Hawaiian diving is pretty easy...if your gear is in good shape...

Diver identity - how to increase underwater

In Cozumel I had a DM who wore an oversized pair of Hawaiian print shorts in the water...he called them his 'fiesta shorts'. Instantly identifiable. For myself, I have a pair of white fins that are high viz, and I've never seen another pair like them. Also, on my BCD I have a rolled orange...

    Maui or Cozumel

I've been to both places too...I would say it's pretty much a tossup. Cozumel may be cheaper but you still pay for a lot in [expensive, for Canadians] US dollars. There's plenty to do topside in both places...it's good to have a car so you can get out of town. Cozumel does have some poor areas...

New Diver Instruction Recommendations, Stuart, Fl. Area

I did my OW checkout dives with Ham Mason at Jupiter Dive. It was a few years ago but it was a great experience and the shop was both very professional and very friendly. I'd certainly recommend them based on that.

    Diving in Florida & sharks

Most sharks you will see as a diver will be smaller reef sharks. They are not major predators...mostly they are scavengers and small predators...think foxes and bobcats. Major predators...the lions and tigers and bears [oh my!] of the ocean are exceedingly rare anywhere most sport diving is...

    Post your last gear purchase

My size L Aeris 5 Oceans BCD is okay over a wetsuit, but doesn't have enough reach for going over a drysuit, so I've replaced it...with a size XL 5 Oceans I managed to find on Amazon. I wasn't sure about the 5 Oceans design at first, but I have grown to love it.

    Warmest wetsuits or semi-dry suits?

For cold water diving I use a Seasoft custom 5mm semi-dry and layer it with a Waterproof hooded vest and a Thermolution heated vest. I'm not too sensitive to the cold, and I find this setup more than enough down to single digits Centigrade [about 50F]. I went with the custom suit because I'm...

Is this what I should usually expect? (long, advice requested)

I'm not that far from my own first dives, and I can relate to a lot that you mention. Cattle boat dive ops concentrate on getting lots of relatively unskilled divers into and out of the water with a minimum of specialized care, and they often skimp on quality equipment as well. The fact that...

    Getting noticed as dive guide

Divemaster in Cozumel wore a pair of oversized contrasty Hawaiian print board shorts...he called them his 'fiesta shorts'. Pretty much unmistakable underwater.

    Current dive conditions- Cozumel?

Windy tonight...port was closed this afternoon and it's a tossup whether there will be diving tomorrow I'm finishing my second week here and there have several less than ideal days since the 15th. Currents have been strong...visibility varied, mostly middle of the road. On the 21st the port...
