Safety stops in OW with no line - tips?

One thing we do is to spend a few minutes at 1/2 maximum depth. Then if we know there is surge or current we stage a gradual ascent trying to accomodate 3 minutes at 5m. Haven't had any problems using these rules. In fact on a liveaboard that sometimes really swung in the wind I checked my...

    Question about Integrated Air Computers

I also dive a Pro Plus 2. When planning our first liveaboard backups were certainly a big question. My son and I use Nitrox and we were looking at 5 dives a day. So for Christmas that year we both got the Atom 2.0. A little pricey but I think well worth it in the long run. One of the divers...

    Scuba diving and life insurance

I'm over 60 and when searching for a wonderful term life policy with a great, competion busting premium for a diver I came up with nothing. Once you fess up to your love for the bottom of the ocean you can kiss that first class rate category bye bye...

    Computers vs. Gauges?

My opinion...I wouldn't even use an SPG as a backup to my computer. My son and I both have 2 computers.

At what point do you buy a tank?

Lot's of excellent advice here. I live near Lake Erie and don't do that much cold, greenwater diving anymore. But, here's another vote for the "Convenience Factor". The 4th of July...my son and I thought it would be good to go to the local quarry and jump in. Nice...cool, refreshing, fun...

    Travelling with Equipment

I always travel with my reg, computers, mask, swimsuit and at least a toothbrush in a roll aboard. My little camera fits in my shirt pocket without the housing. Never had any problems yet and this practice proved itself this year when all of my checked luggage was lost for 3 days.

    Save a dive kit

I have the same commercial $19 save-a-dive kit that I bought 4 years ago. I have opened it twice but never used anything out of it. Recently I had need of a zip tie and some duct tape which luckily was available on the boat I was with so I'm going to add these two items...I have a mostly used...

    Back up dive computer

We're going on our first liveaboard vacation in April. The economics and disappointment factors compelled me to gear up with back up computers. So for Christmas we both got Oceanic Atom 2.0's to back up our Oceanic consoles. We don't do many square profile dives so to me computers are the...

very odd question for the forum

At that price, keep it and dive it!!! I've had one for 4 years now that I paid 8 times that much for and I'm keeping it! It's really a great computer. I'm not sure which is my real back up computer; my Pro Plus or the atom 2.0. I love them both... Commit to setting aside some cash each...

A little guilt about about using another lds

Hmmm...this one takes some thought... My son and I have done and still are doing a lot of training with our favorite shop. There's a lot of history there...OW, AOW, refreshers, rescue clinic. The instructors know us and we know them. From this point of view I can't compare a dive shop as...

    Swimming pool bad for gear?

My gear came with detailed care and maintenance instructions including a 1 hour soak in warm water with tank attached. This makes sense since city water is also chlorinated and allowing a 1 hour soak would give the chlorine a chance become inactivated. So after diving I try to fill the bath...

    Breathing from BCD

I heard a story about a group of people trapped in a submarine in more than 300 ft of water. There was a diver with them who instructed them about the cesa telling them not to pass their own bubbles on the way up. They all made it...good illustration for never holding your breath huh?

    Preseason Routine

As a minimum I have my gear put thru annual maintenance then check it out in the pool for about an hour. This year we're also doing a rescue clinic in the pool. I like the idea and it's only $25.00 (we own our tanks and they are full after annual visual).

Wall dive advice - low experience diver

My first wall dive was after I had completed my AOW. I requested to buddy up with the DM since at the time I had less than 20 dives logged in the past year. There were 4 other divers, all more experienced with us. I was last in the water and it was off to the races! It was all I could do...
