Trip Report: Raja Ampat on Calico Jack - Highly recommended!

I'm not feeling as eloquent as Bearkeley, but I recently did the same Sorong/Sorong itinerary with Calico Jack. We started north and ended south. Highlights for me include the friendliness of the crew, comfortable accommodations, dive and eco staff's knowledge, and the ample and delicious...

    September 2017 RA Liveaboard decision

Hi there! I ended up booking the Calico Jack departing Oct 8th. I leave tomorrow morning, as a matter of fact. Sorry I can't help you with Temukira. Cheers!

Oh dear. Overflow not withstanding, anything else stand out as positive or negative about the trip?

    September 2017 RA Liveaboard decision

I have some mandatory vacation coming up in the September time period, and am looking at a couple liveaboards in Raja Ampat. The point of the trip is to dive and see unique places. I'm not sure when or if I'll ever get back to the area. So obviously I want it to count, and RA seemed to be the...

Great time with Umicoza in Ishigaki

My wife and I spent 4 nights in Ishigaki, diving with Umicoza. We had a great time, and were impressed by the team's patience and flexibility. Each day had a range of skill levels and snorkelers, as well as many different languages spoken. Umicoza handled them all. The boats were well cared...

Shipping gear back from Japan (Ishigaki) to USA

Thank you, both. Ideally, I'd ship the gear back to the states so I don't have to worry about it at all once we're done. But perhaps the takuhaibin is the next best thing. That's the kuro nekko, right? I've seen them all over the place during our few trips to Japan.

Shipping gear back from Japan (Ishigaki) to USA

My wife and I are considering a trip to Japan. The current plan is to fly from the US into Tokyo and spend a night. The next day, fly to Ishigaki for several days of diving. After Ishigaki, we would fly to Hokaido for another 3-4 days for topside tourism, before returning to Tokyo for the...

    Apeks SPG dimensions

I have a desktop ruler and a retractable metal measuring tape. I had hoped for something more precise, especially with regards to the thickness.

    Apeks SPG dimensions

Interesting... This manual http://scubaspares.com/manuals/AP5929.pdf suggests otherwise, including 4 different Apeks consoles. Perhaps I can rig something up instead. I don't trust that I will keep it safe and secure without some sort of additional protection. Thanks for the info.

CHange of Plan for the Philippines - Dumaguete, Moalboal, and Bohol

We just returned for a little more than a week at both Bohol (Panglao) and Dumaguete (Dauin). Great places, both. Saw some of the smallest critters ever (lots of pipefish, a seahorse, nudibranchs) as well as the largest (whale shark on our way out to a dive site). At Dumaguete, the recent bad...

    Apeks SPG dimensions

I recently acquired a metric Apeks SPG- the gauge only, no console. I believe this is part # AP5709, but not completely certain. I would like to find a 1 or 2 gauge compatible boot/console (my existing console does not fit). What are the gauge's dimensions, and are there recommended consoles...

    Backscatter Flip3.1 vs SRP BlurFix+CYD

We did make it to Apo. Weather was iffy while in Dumaguete, so other than the 1 day at Apo, we stuck to Dauin. Bohol was also very nice, with a chance whale shark encounter. I heard Bohol got flooded a couple days after we left. Sticking to the topic, the Blurfix +CYD worked really well. I...

    Backscatter Flip3.1 vs SRP BlurFix+CYD

Bit the bullet on the Blurfix3+ 55 w/ CYD. Again, not that anything was wrong with the Backscatter, I just felt like this was the better choice for me. Online transaction went smoothly, and package arrived very timely. Some extras that had been offered during the pre-order process also...

    Backscatter Flip3.1 vs SRP BlurFix+CYD

Thanks all- lots of good advice and tips. Doesn't make the decision any easier, but maybe lessens me fear that I'll make a wrong choice.

    Backscatter Flip3.1 vs SRP BlurFix+CYD

The Flip + URPRO is a very good idea. I had considered it as someone in another mentioned they were going to try it out. However, as you mention, it's beyond my budget. I'd like to stay <$100 including tax & shipping.

advice of go pro setting for diving

I think of it like a strobe light. Unless you are on a tripod, things are in motion, even if they are micromovements from muscle shakes. If your strobe is flashing slowly, when the light illuminates the scene everything is likely to have moved from the prior flash. If the strobe is flashing...

    Backscatter Flip3.1 vs SRP BlurFix+CYD

It would appear you are indeed correct. I had mistakenly applied the description of the URPRO CY filter to the CYD filter. Reading the page for the latter, it shows "polycarbonate". Perhaps this doesn't perform quite as well as the glass CY. Hrm.... Given my price point, I would not opt for...
