How to break in a new Bare Dry Suit

In your post you mentioned a rush to take off your hood and neck seal. Any chance you were experiencing carotid squeeze from a tight neck seal? Was neck seal stretched and trimmed properly? Walking from your car to the water with the weight of the tank and strap/harness pressure can...

Air 2 Octo/inflators -- why the heated debate?

Kinda diversion from the OP's original question but relates to gear choices and skills. I am a proponent of flexibility and not being married to any one gear/configuration philosophy. It is in your best interest to have the skills and be comfortable diving with different set ups. When you are...

    Don't be that guy

NWGD, Unfortunately had that experience too! Twice Once while raising (leveling) house boats on Lake Union and repairing flex sewer lines and then again on toilet fish reef in Pago Pago Harbor in American Samoa. Looked like someone TP'd the reef. Diver 85, Funny if the urge was so...

    Don't be that guy

There has to be a cert. for puke diving in heavy seas and have the athletic skills to avoid the big chunks. I am empathetic to someone being seasick but yo!!!

    Save the Turtle

One more Belize story. On the boat during a surface interval between dives we spot this brown mass bobbing in the swells on the surface. We cruise by and on closer inspection we found that it was a Turtle completely ensnared and trapped in a chunk of fishing net. To say it was stressed is...

    Don't be that guy

You don't have to be the world's elite diver to have and use common sense. Last week on a small dive boat in Belize (6 to 8' swells through the reef passage) we were trying to hand off gear and get back on the boat when I noticed this white cloud in the water. What the hell is that? As I...

Do you use your SAC for anything? POLL

For the past 3 years I have recorded SAC/RMV on every dive plotted against heart rate. For me the range has been fairly consistent and reliable. Yes the info is used for figuring gas requirements on deeper dives.

    Rec Diving Then vs. Now

IMHO the biggest change has been the availability of information re: the net. It is so much easier to get educated and to pursue advanced dive academics. In the old school days (67/FSDA) divers weren't necessarily tougher than divers of today but the minimalist gear of the time kinda forced...

    insta buddy nightmares

Here's a sleazy little "ice breaking" trick that I have had pretty good success with that eliminates getting paired up with an unknown quantity on a trip. While in the booking process, I let the owner know that I will be writing a destination travel article for a local dive rag. When I get to...

    Snap Shackles & Dive Gear

We use them for connecting a scooter to the "O" ring attachment point on the crotch strap. They are a little more difficult to close/engage with gloves on but release is quick and easy.

Funny, Stupid, Dangerous things done with Scuba

Shoulda known better. We would launch a zodiac at Carmel River Beach and go out past the surf line, leave our tanks in the zodiac, blow up our drysuits like sumo wrasslers and body surf with snorkles and fins. We would get trashed. It was hard to believe you could end up with sand in your...

Why no WARM UP when diving?

I used to warm up but then I got a pee valve. On a more serious note. I have been heart rate monitoring and logging data for the past several years. Oddly enough the greatest increase in heart rate occurs while lugging gear to the boat/beach and suiting up. Once in the water, an average dive...

Most disturbing phone call I've gotten in a long time

I wonder if the issues in JL's original post are a reflection of trends in the Dive industry or direct result of people making poor decisions while struggling to deal with our economy. I am in the construction industry (electrical contractor) and have definitely been impacted by the downturn...
