My thoughts are with all whom mourn her loss, especially you, Peter, and those in the Puget Sound community who loved her so. She will be missed by many.
I dive with the D800. And, I dive an NEX-7. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Is it cumbersome? I'm not a huge person, so any camera with strobes is a something to be cautious with. I've had it in some pretty rough conditions and yeah, there were moments it felt like a sail. And...
I did the Catalina event two years ago and had a fantastic time. It is very well run - with plenty of suits to try on and test. We had a huge number of volunteers, too, that made sure everything ran smoothly.
Bring your own tank - you'll need it. I also brought along my usual gear - BCD...
Benzonar -
Can I ask how old the charger was? I took out a brand new Sola 1200 to SE Asia, and the charger stopped working on the 3rd day. At that point, I had used it only four times.
Like you, not a complete disaster as I borrowed another divers. I have a Sola 800 and while the charger...
I think there are all different types of "comfort". While I have a fair amount of dives, there is still occasional apprehension - especially when faced with a new situation. What comes in to play is experience and knowing that I've been trained well and, providing I keep my wits about me, will...
No, nor was it something mentioned by my LDS when I signed up for OW most likely because I was already headset about what I wanted to do.
However, I think it's a terrific opportunity to introduce folks to diving.
Gear bought over the internet from one of "those" stores will [insert favorite word - such as kill, maim, debilitate, make you a worse diver, etc, etc] you.
No debating the merits of a LDS to online, but truth be told? I'm still alive.
That's pretty darn good on the visa! I will admit on that front, a bit more investigation was probably in order especially with how well the Wakatobi staff handled everything. I would think that under 10 minutes isn't far off.
As for the macro highlights? All the nudibranchs - all the small...
I've stayed at the Hilton and was very happy. Been trying to make this an annual trip over New Years. Also, both times I've dove with Rainbow Reef and absolutely am pleased with them!
Just returned from 10 days of the most glorious diving in Wakatobi. Everything you've read? It's true.
Let's talk about getting there first. Fantastic flight out on Singapore Air routing from LAX through Tokyo to Singapore, with a plane change to Denpasar. The first indication that...
Awesome! Very glad you got the lens back, too. I dropped the same piece of gear on the head of a puffer fish. I think it's just the karma of those lenses. :)
That's an excellent point - I've dove it and was extremely wary about the cut-outs from previous experience and reminders. But that being the case, it must have been one heck of a surge situation. Very, very sad.
WTH?

I'm trying to think of how this could happen and honestly, while I've bonked my head, this would take quite a bit underwater. You'd have to sink like a stone and land on your brain bucket. Anyone have any ideas?
Eh, I tend to enjoy diving and don't worry about how other people have their gear rigged. It's none of my business unless it's strangling a coral head or have it wrapped around their head (and yes, I saw a student pull that trick off - it was delightful). I always found it's best to be...
Good to know about the PP3. I wanted to cry when I found out the 2 wouldn't work with the 2.1. Common sense would say....?? Yet oddly enough, my PP2.1 works on a Wisdom 3. Go figure.
A universal cable for these would be so easy to do.
I dive the Libra and while I think it is an extremely fine BC, I only have one complaint - it does not work well with a drysuit. I wear a size medium and the straps are too short to easily pull yourself in and out of when. I am hopeful they'll rectify this with whatever model them come up...
Same thoughts as Oly5050... It all depends on the specialties you take with regards to the cost. Some will have more dives than others (such as Enriched Air - no dives required). It would be best if you decide what specialties you want to take and then price out from there? Here in SoCal...
