Just bought a pony system, need help with answers...

    Cornfed, let me help you with this. PO2 = FO2 x P(total) P(total) = PO2 / FO2 = 1.4 / 0.36 for backgas or P(total) = PO2 / FO2 = 1.5 / 0.36 for deco 1.5 / 0.36 = 4.167 ATAs = 105 fsw or 107 ffw It would be a bad idea to dive deeper than 105 fsw or 107 ffw with EAN36 in your 40 cu...

New in N. Cal! - Question about BC

ad hominem. ad hominems are used in trial procedure to sway juries with emotional appeals. they really have no appropriate place on a scuba board. they probably have no appropriate place in court either. to wit, you do not hear ad hominem arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court. but a...

New in N. Cal! - Question about BC

Good. EBA is one of those "skills" that some agencies actually practice in the open water, while others do not. It probably would guarantee a trip to the local chamber, or worse, if done from any significant depth. I do the drill in the pool with students, and also practice weight belt...

New in N. Cal! - Question about BC

OK. 1) An EBA is a last resort, not a planned contingency. 2) Dont forget that you most likely have a buddy. If you or your buddy or both are wearing wetsuits, one of you may have to bear the full negative buoyancy at depth for both. Add that up, and you will see why Zeagle's 65 lb...

Then you might as well use a 40 and fill it with EAN36 so that you could egress from your first dive with 1400 psi from it, and have the remaining 1600 psi for your second dive's egression, and simply leave 1000 psi in your main tank under the rule of thirds. I find there is little use to...

    heated socks! maybe?

New in N. Cal! - Question about BC

For a little guy like you, maybe. :) Plus, you are the best diver I have ever met. And a far cry from a beginner. So I will stick to my guns on the 45 lb issue for beginners in wetsuits on the West Coast Best Coast north of Point Concepcion. And even in your case, your blonde diving...

    Equipment Choices for Spouses/S.O.s

I had lunch with an old friend today, whom I had not seen in 3 years, since we were both ab freediving together last, with our former dive club. He is engaged too, and his fiancee wont try scuba. He asked me, How did you get your fiancee to go diving? I explained, we started swimming...

    heated socks! maybe?

I know of one tech diver who dives with heated thermals under his drysuit. He is thin, and heat loss on deco hangs is probably a major issue for him, beyond simply using argon for warmth. I have heard he is really happy with the battery warmed thermals as well.

    Equipment Choices for Spouses/S.O.s

A really good buddy team, like diver and spouse, will be very very close. There wont be any differences. And since we are not pushing NDL limits, there wont be any "calling of the turns." What on earth are you talking about? We were talking about gear for diving with our spouse.

    Equipment Choices for Spouses/S.O.s

This is too funny. I learned something about myself today. Maybe this is just a guy thing, after all. I have mounted a small square-tipped knife on each of our SPGs. These knives are so small that they are quite unobtrusive, yet if you need to cut line, they are there. I then mount my...

    Equipment Choices for Spouses/S.O.s

I completely agree. Additionally, my fiancee feels peace and one-ness when our computers give the same exact results. And she takes it as a bad omen when there are differences. Harkens back to the old expression, a man with two watches never knows exactly what time it is. Two different...

poll -how many divers collect game ?

When I cleave it, in half, before immersing it, it separates from the shell like a charm! Cooks in 60 seconds as well. Very tender.

    Equipment Choices for Spouses/S.O.s

THE COMPUTER is the main thing that you want to be exactly the same. Particularly when you are NDL nitrox diving together. We both use the Suunto Vyper, except mine is black and hers is teal (our favorite colors, respectively). Mask -- definitely not! Hers is a TUSA in teal and mine is an...

When is it appropriate to take AOW Classes?

An AOW class will give you 5 to 10 more dives under the supervision of an instructor. That is the best thing in the world in terms of gaining scuba diving experience. The college OW courses usually have about a dozen scuba dives associated with them in order to train a new diver. Over the...

So, at the very least, then you and I would hopefully agree that a "Spare Air" can is a totally inadequate piece of equipment. Sometimes it is better to focus on the area of agreement than on the areas of disagreement.

    Instructor Experience

I completely agree. I know that some agencies are not popular. But they are still agencies, with protocols, and they issue cards. I may not agree with all of TDI's protocols, but at the very least they are worthy of discussion, in my opinion. I may also not agree with all of GUE's...
