Ive been on a dive holiday in the tropics and had the misfortune to have been given a tank that had JUST had a hydro done. Pretty clear now that the tank hadn't been properly dried. The filter in my first stage was blocked with a sludge of ally oxide shutting off all air flow.
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we bring you sad news. Our Abu Mike passed away Sunday morning in New Zealand. His family were by his side. Mike touched so many peoples' lives in Vanuatu,
He will be so sorely missed. He was the first dive operator to believe that Ni-Vanuatu divers...
This is a subject dear to my heart. I would love to see every instructor,AI and DM carry a catch bag on every dive. Imagine the trash that would be removed if we picked up just one item every dive.
Sorry guys to answer a bunch of questions all at once. 1) There was no tank "changeover" as such. pretty darn coll system. They topped up the tanks using multiple refill lines from the onboard tank. -VERY fast topups. -then ya just hook ya first stage back up. 2) 1 was max depth 20m -I wasn't...
I recently did some diving on Australia's GBR. First time ever on a dive boat setup for 50 divers or more. Definitely not my style of diving. Max bottom time 40 minutes. Dive 1-2 surface interval only 10 minutes.
It seems ive been well spoiled diving in the pacific with max numbers 14 per...
Dunno over 1000 dives now.
1 computer total failure cause by human error refitting the battery.
2) No air flow through regs caused by blocked filter. This was traced to ally slurry or ally dust in a rental tank.-No question this was a poorly maintained tank issue.-The company was prosecuted...
You might have seen the CID van running around for awhile after it closed. Greg is still the only Hydro test facility on the island. Far as I know he still does tank fills.Pity is that he and Ian knew about all the really good dive sites rather than the same old same old type sites.
Findingmenno--it was Cook island Divers-Greg Wilson.
He just pulled the pin in the end.
He had the best training facility on the island IMO.
His pool was actually over 8 feet deep.
To be honest the amount of divers only supports 3 dive ops. 6 means everybody is hungry.
That and some...
I'd agree that "working" for a resort dive Op does wear you out. Main reasons being the expectations you are going to do everything for them and because of the relatively low experience levels they tend to make the "dumb" mistakes more experienced divers don't
Bob--that's darn scarey. If you don't teach tables then how can they understand the whole point of the computers? To me its hand in hand. Tables then explaining what the computer does for you.
Actually Ive done a big ol read of this thread. I can see where the issue lies with those focussing on the last mistake and those looking at mistake 1 and 2.
Perhaps Im wrong but it seems to me that those with "skin in the game" are seeing things one way and those who are "just" divers see it...
I'm quite fond of the Mares Eos 3 RZ. It sits nicely in the BC pocket. Bright enough for seeing in small wrecks and multi brightness as well as flash mode
IMO looking a bit more mature is a HUGE advantage when it comes to dealing with students/customers. Its a funny thing but you do seem to get given respect easier/quicker than the younger guys and gals. But as others have said you are not going to get rich on instructor wages.
Ana-Im really REALLY struggling here --why have you automatically jumped to stage 3 of the issue and totally ignored the far more important point ? That being- the OP's wife chose well in advance to dive with an inflator that was faulty.
This wasn't a "ohh ****" senario on the day this was...
Rabe--Im hoping that what you have heard was someone taking the mickey (poking fun)
I have to admit to have said every single one of those things to customers at some point in time.
The sage nod or confused frown tells me pretty fast A their actual knowledge and B if they are actually...
Crikey folks Im pretty darned confused here.
You guys are going on about another diver checking/ touching your gear -from my POV that was not the main issue.
The MAIN issue is that the OP's wife had a mechanical gear failure. NOT on the day but some time in the past. The issue should have been...
From my POV I go back to first lecture I ever had about diving--actually from my dad. dive accidents are rarely one huge incident .More often its a series of small things that together make for something serious. In this case regardless of the right/wrong of someone touching your gear The BC...
