    Welland 2018

The scuba park actually had a brand new (well, couple of years now or so) high-tech washroom installed. It's quite nice, solar powered and clean. The trick is figuring out that the door that normally faces you is just for maintenance and locked. The entrance is the opposite side. Water temp was...

Vis @ Welland Scuba Park? Possible 9/3 dive

On the 26th it was a guesstimated 3 metres average, and significantly less in certain spots, like along the guidelines where the newbies from the courses went through and stirred up the silt.

    Tobermory this summer

We're also warm water divers. Here's what we did. We aimed for late August / early September, as this is when the water is the warmest. We booked our dives with Diver's Den way in advance, 2+ months ahead of time. There were already other divers booked, but nobody requested any specific dive...

St. Croix - Tickets booked, now who, what, where?

Shore diving is very limited in St Croix. We did a shore dive at Cane Bay, but the swim out was very long so we didn't do that a second time. The exception is the pier and, as others have said, an absolute must. If you want to shore dive, stick to the pier, you won't be disappointed. There's a...

First hand accounts of the condition of the Great Barrier Reef?

I'm not the author, but my understanding of the "pronounced dead" articles is not that the reef is dead now, but rather that it's in a "dead man walking state," meaning that even though some or even most parts are still alive now, there is no path to survival or recovery if things continue...

Stop steering new divers in North America towards DIN regulators

Before I had my own regs, I used to use rental yoke regs, and that one time I wanted to go diving and one of the yoke tanks had something wrong with the valve. I think it was the o-ring, so I tried to change it with a spare one that I had, but it was a different size and so didn't fit. I had to...

Stop steering new divers in North America towards DIN regulators

Sure. Unless the o-ring of one of the yoke rental tanks decides to leak, blow, extrude or otherwise fail. I'm sure you've had that happen. So have I. I've never had that happen with the DIN o-ring in my own reg. Yeah, it's a last-ditch resort if really no DIN/convertible tanks are available...

Stop steering new divers in North America towards DIN regulators

This is a bit of a catch 22, isn't it? DIN is better, but it poses some short-term difficulties because it's not in widespread use. Therefore we should not promote DIN, thus keeping it from gaining widespread use. And so nothing changes. Kinda like you guys and your centuries old quarrel with...

    ACUC nothamerica closedACUC is

Oh I have been to places that didn't know about ACUC. But they still accepted the card. There are way too many certification agencies around these days, many of which even smaller than ACUC, to expect that every dive op should know about all of them. I think it would be rather silly for a dive...

    ACUC nothamerica closedACUC is

Been certified ACUC in 2011 and never had a problem getting it recognized anywhere. Interesting situation since last I heard, ACUC was the only agency recognized by the Canadian military.

Wrist computers - what are you using?

Mares Puck for several years now. Does everything I need and hasn't let me down yet. Also inexpensive. My only complaint would be that the data cable for downloading dives is expensive, but there are cheaper aftermarket alternatives.

Diving in La Romana Dominican Republic

We dove with Dressel Divers out of the Iberostar. We stayed on the north side (Bavaro) and the diving there is pretty meh. However, we took a day trip down to the Iberostar Bayahibe for 3 dives and the diving there was very good. I'm looking forward to going back some day. Unfortunately that...

Anyone ever been in an accident in Bonaire w/o their insurance?

Can't speak for Bonaire, but we've messed up our rental car in Europe one time. Declined the local insurance as Amex had us covered. Reported the damage at the checkout and referred them to Amex as per contract. Never heard from them again. Also never heard from Amex - they never received a...
