What dive shop to rent from?

I tend to be a loyal customer when a shop or company treats me well and take my business elsewhere when they don't -- I don't complain, I vote with my feet (and wallet). I started with CCDS because that's what my instructor used -- its ownership has changed but the service level has stayed good...

Considering Hanging it up...but...what to do after scuba??

I'm a Pacific Northwesterner living in exile in Florida, so I'll be diving for a while. If I was living out there I'd still be hiking and biking and camping and sea kayaking and snow skiing and fly fishing (actually still do most of those things, they just require a flight now instead of a...

Question Caves Close to International Airports Florida

With just a little flexibility you can get in a variety of nice cave diving out of Tampa. I live in Tampa and do day trips to Ginnie pretty regularly -- just at 2 hours drive. With an overnight or two stay in the Branford/Mayo/Live Oak area you can dive a number of intro-appropriate sites...

Closed Shearwater Petrel v1, two of them

The Petrels say "Save us from fleabay and get us out of this drawer and back in the water!" $398 each (so you can say to yourself that you got a Shearwater for less than $400) (+ modest shipping if I've got to mail it -- ~$15) Note: now each will come with Bluetooth dongle but neither with the...

    bluetooth dive software

MacDive. Not free but well supported. Desktop and iOS versions are separate purchases. Both connect with most Bluetooth dive computers (check the website for list). I’ve never used Subsurface, but I’d probably try the open source free software first if I hadn’t already bought MacDive.

Closed Shearwater Petrel v1, two of them

I've got two version 1 Shearwater Petrels for sale. Neither would be mistaken for new -- they've got some Cave Love on them -- but both are fully functional and have served me well. One I bought new, the other used as a backup. I'm basically trading them up for one Perdix AI. Both have screen...

Closed Dewalt DCB-609 9ah batteries pair (for Blacktip)

I've got two Dewalt Flexvolt DCB-609 9ah batteries I bought for my Blacktip. I use my Blacktip in caves and decided that I needed the 12ah batteries. These have been used exactly once, still well in warranty. They work fine, I just need the bigger ones. $200/pair plus shipping or pick up in...

Can't bluetooth connect Petrel to M1 Mac

Thanks for the tip -- led me to some research and it appears that Monterey has major Bluetooth issues -- I have several devices attached to my M1 Mac via Bluetooth with no problems, but I think the original Petrels, which is what I have, have an older version of Bluetooth that's particularly...

Can't bluetooth connect Petrel to M1 Mac

I recently upgraded my MacBook to an M1 MacBook Pro and I can no longer connect my Petrel to the Mac via bluetooth. I open Bluetooth preferences on the Mac, select "Start Bluetooth" on the Petrel, the Petrel shows up on the Mac Bluetooth list with a "connect" button, I click the button on the...

    How many spools and reels...

My bag ‘o reels has 400’ primaries, 250’ jumps, and 100’ safety spools. Minimum: 2 safety spools (no jumps not leading) and usually carry a Justin Case jump reel. Add primary (400’ unless I know 250’ will do), plus 1 jump reel/jump. I butt clip ‘em.

My wife is looking for a back inflate BC for traveling

Concur; the Zeagle Express Tech is a great lightweight minimalist travel BPW design. I prefer the regular to the deluxe model — the deluxe has unnecessary padding. Less expensive, but you’ll probably want to add a ditchable weight system to it. Zeagle makes one, or XSscuba ditchable pockets work...

Advice requested: Packing scuba gear for air travel?

Higher mass (weight/volume), more expensive and less durable, and might need to explain to TSA (regs, computer, lights): checked Bulkier lower mass, hard to damage (exposure protection, BCD, fins): checked I've always put my mask in checked, but might move it to carry on in case of lost...

Classes to be a great well rounded diver?

OW + AOW + Nitrox + Rescue = competently trained recreational diver with some good number of dives in there, because diving ain't a book larnin' thang. As a previous poster mentioned, Cavern is a great course to focus on buoyancy and trim. Greatly improved my comfort level in the water.

    Dive computer

Really good displays are expensive, and thus aren't used in entry level (i.e. inexpensive) computers. Entry level computers use LCD displays made up of multiple 7-segment elements; higher-end computers use LED dot-matrix displays. My first computer was a Mares Nemo Wide, bought because it had a...
