Possible Barotrauma diving a dry hood?

Thanks Peter - great information. I am working along the same principle you describe - the face seal was too "good" around my mask, causing the condition you describe. My suit is a DUI with Zip-Seals, and the dry hood / neck seal is integrated into the neck zip-seal. I do wear a beanie. I...

Possible Barotrauma diving a dry hood?

Am a Great Lakes diver who dives dry the majority of the time. Decided to go with a dry hood and beanie this year vs a neoprene hood. First three dives to 30 ft to get used to the hood were uneventful. On a trip this past weekend, was at ~40 ft and had the discomfort of a squeeze. Up 5 feet...

Backup Mask - Ever Had to Use While Solo?

"I am careful", "have it on the boat", "usually dive fresh water" - all very interesting responses. I subscribe strongly to the "better to have it and not need it" philosophy. it is a small item that goes in my L thigh pocket with my back-up computer. I have needed my back-up once after...

    Technology Changes Since Last Dive

Computer to maximize your dive time - tables assume a "rectangular" dive profile, but with a computer, you will get "credit" for portions of your dive that are above the planned bottom depth. As a back-up, second computer, or log your dive time, depth, surface interval and work the tables as a...

New Diver trying to make decisions on gear

I agree with computer and regs as first purchases, at minimum. If you can get into a BP/W, try it out - as stated earlier, it is modular, so adapts very well as you progress. I had a rec BC for about 25 dives and converted. Never looked back. can be used rec but will keep you from additional...

Is the Shearwater Petrel too much?advice

Started out with the Atomic Cobalt - wanted to move away from hose integrated, so went to a Galileo Sol, but was not impressed with the screen readability at depth. Given that coupled with my desire to get more into technical diving, gas planning, etc - I went to the Petrel and LOVE it! Easy...

Wow, doubles really are easier to dive than singles

I totally agree - the belt got ditched after I took the UTD Doubles Mini and did several weight checks with near empty tanks. I actually ended up adding two lbs in between the tanks, and I may still swap the AL BP for the SS BP for a little more stack-up tolerance!

A little tip for noobs with cameras...

Lots of interesting points of view on this topic. I can tell you that one of the main goals of my diving was to be able to document all my dives. I even had my P&S with me at my AOW classes and dove with my classmates to get in the practice. My key was practice - I did about 40 dives in water...

Wow, doubles really are easier to dive than singles

Just started diving them late last year, and they do take a bit more effort on the surface, but on a boat, it is nice not to have to mess with switching tanks in-between dives, it removes the pony bottle I was carrying and it got rid of the weight belt I was carrying. Underneath, I too felt an...
