    The Vagaries of Trim

If you were teaching a novice with a foot light trim balance problem I'd expect you'd be telling them to try arching the back a little more and drop the hips and extend the neck a touch, instead of messing them around with ankle weights, or lowering the cylinder below their bum. You know most...

What is the future of Scuba Diving and the technology we use

The potential of divers ballast and the first class lever to maximise the size of fin the average person could use, is relitively unexplored. As is Gel based protective clothing and sea water battery technology. I suppose if someone made s break through in sea water battery technolgy it might...

My 10 year old wants to dive.

I dont have any children of my own, although I was once a kid in short pants, that wanted to learn to scuba dive. I've been reading articles about scuba for a few years. Larry "Harris" Taylor and his article on why he wont teach children is a classic. Frank honest opinions based on reason are...

    Burned on Ebay

Hi Ducky, Cheers man, you've found my avatar, :banghead: I wondered where I left it and I've been quite lost without it.:D Hi Pal I had a quick check out in the garage but never saw it, I got it as part of a bag of old kit some 10 years ago and never used it. I keep meaning to do a clear...

Why do we bash each other?

:dontknow:Scuba board forum is always polite and friendly, lots of highly experienced keen divers, diving in different styles and conditions that are often unknown to us. So many hints and tips and such a quick reponse its often information overload. A little bit of passion and heated debate...

Should young divers use computers (split from Which computer thread)

If or when your training a person, you cant do more than pass on what skills and advice you have, however flawed it is, every time its proved wrong knowledge grows. Sadly our nation has lost many important skills in my life time. As for diving, we teach the syllabus, it changes.

    Gear envy...what's yours?

I guess the other mans grass is always greener. In Scotland we've got the west coast lochs and whilst I've never needed to dive in a quarry, we all rave about the great diving to be found off Northern Ireland. I find +- £5 for 1m of bungy and 1m of plastic hose from B+Q and a couple of cable...

Should young divers use computers (split from Which computer thread)

A computer is a tool, that needs to be followed. When it isn't followed, many models lock up and throw up messages like error or refer to tables. Whilst a dive timer obviously wont give you as much information, I find a dive timer is more reliable, battery life is longer, no buttons that break...

Should young divers use computers (split from Which computer thread)

Your diving profile is very impressive. I've seen Sunntos and Aladins lock up and lock out basic information like max depth actual depth and elapsed dive time underwater during a dive. I've seen divers so fixiated on computors their incapable of doing a proper ascent. I also often find that the...

    Diving: the future

If I'm not an 80 year old free diver, I'll take a pair of those gyro assisted screw fins, a membrain hydrox full face mask and one of them one size perfect fit liquid polymer super insulating non buoyant wetsuits if they make them in black. :)

    Burned on Ebay

I've offered Snarks, Kawasakis, FSH, Healthways and Aqualung pro regs etc and ended up throwing them away. I think I've got an old capillary somwhere in the back of the shed, but if a new capillary depth gauge is $20 why buy an old one?

Should young divers use computers (split from Which computer thread)

Perhaps I should of asked why would anyone want to buy a teenager a dive computor? Whilst I can obviously read that somebody wants a recommendation for a computer I honestly believe buying a comparitively new diver a computor is a mistake and doing them a dis-service. Asking me why I have this...

Buy him a dive timer and teach him to use his mind.

Poll - Dive Flag - Sausage

I used to dive solo a lot near a pier at place called Portencross and fly a blue diver down flag from the shore until I lost 3 of them. 2 were stolen, maybe Rangers F.C. supporters, the other was thrown in the sea, most probably Celtic.:shakehead: I tried a float after a near close encounter...

    Gear envy...what's yours?

I looked at a Fusion the other day that was marketed by Scubapro in the UK, I seem to remember the ticket price was around £900. I cant say it looked all that durable and replacing the neck seal looked difficult and replacing the zip :dontknow:.

    Gear envy...what's yours?

Rebreathers are nice but I reckon their really suited to the more meticullous. Dive lights, well I must of spent a £1000 replacing those I've broken and that Halcyon umbilical went through so many HID bulbs I retired it. These days I've got an Cree SSC P7, which is brighter than a light cannon...

    What is "basic scuba"?

Ballast, Buoyancy control, trim and SAC rate go hand in hand. How much time can one afford to spend on a student and even when you do, looks can be deceiving. You can take them 1:1 over a weekend and think you've really made a difference and see them 6 months later and realise you didn't...

    The Cove

I saw a dolphin show in Port Elisabeth many years ago. It was a wonderful experience. A couple of years ago whilst divng in the sound of Jura I was buzzed by a pod of wild dolphins. They had young wiith them and I was quite alarmed not sure how they would respond, one of them stopped and...

    Horse collar

I had a fenzy some years ago, but the rubber material perished. It had oral inflation on the right hand side. I guess I should of washed and chalked it. We still see some about.
