    Mike Brady AKA MB

I can't see who most of the folks in this photo are, but I recognize the blonde lady, that's Denise (Den) from the UK on one of her many visits to Florida.

    Mike Brady AKA MB

On Thanksgiving day, November 26, 1998 I arrived early in the morning at Amoray Divers in Key Largo to dive with five other people, four of whom I’d never before met in person. I knew them from an online dive forum called Rodale’s SCUBA Diving, a message board sponsored by a print magazine about...

Peter, you and your family have my prayers.

Missing Diver - Fort Lauderdale Florida

It also leads me to believe that the private individual did not leave the diver behind either. There's no need to point fingers.

    Your favorite certification agency ...

There are a number of problems with this. It's very difficult, fairly expensive, and extremely time consuming to make such a comparison. I know because I did it about 15 or so years ago. I included only three agencies (PADI, NAUI, and YMCA) in my study. There were, when I last counted, about...

    RIP Quero

I'm very sorry to hear this. She is someone who earned my respect.

    Multi Agency Certification Requirements

This is starting to look more and more like something that was done over 10 years ago. One of the agencies filed a lawsuit over it. I sincerely hope that does not happen here. NAUI doesn't use specialties for Master Diver. They have an actual class.

    What is all this stuff!!

Do you know it's not a dive computer?

    Aren't "100" Dives enough!?!

No number of dives will necessarily give a diver the experience required, but more dives is usually better than fewer. Requiring diversity in diving experience is a step in the right direction. Some agencies require it by requiring candidates to have at least 10 dives in each of various...

Problems with Scuba Pro Jets - I bump my fins into one another!

Jets are wider than many other fins. I had the same issue when I started diving. Just dive often, soon you'll stop bumping your fins at all.

    Aren't "100" Dives enough!?!

The opinions I expressed in this thread 11 years ago are pretty much unchanged. I haven't been nearly as active in the last couple of years, but I still pop in every so often, I last posted in January. Thanks for the kind words, let me know when you'll be back in Florida. I'm not the OP...

Can people really get scuba certified without knowing how to swim?

Yes, it is possible, in fact I know it happens. There was a time when all certification agencies required swimming. That is no longer the case. While some still require swimming, others have made swimming an optional skill allowing students to substitute snorkeling for swimming. It is quite...

    The History of the ScubaBoard

I can't speak for Pete, but I have no issues. Continuing to repeat it doesn't make it so. I remember the incident very clearly. Not true. No one is misrepresenting you nor is anyone trying to cast you in a bad light. You've merely forgotten what happened. There's no sin in that. As...

    The History of the ScubaBoard

Yes, it happened before you owned the board. Of course we discussed it. While I don't remember your words, I do remember your outrage over the charges. You were not the only one who was ticked off, but because you felt personally betrayed, you were in the front of the crowd with a torch...

    The History of the ScubaBoard

Sorry for the late post, but I've been away for a while. Joe, Thanks for starting the thread, it's been fun. I have one (Thanks, Pete) now if someone will pick up the other.... Welcome back, you've been missed! I wear mine quite often and fondly remember all the good times and people from...

I dived solo more when I was younger.

    Wearing mask backwards on forehead

In rough water you can lose a mask if it's on your forehead either forward or backward or even if it's on your face. I've lost exactly one mask. I was swimming on the surface in rough water. My mask was securely (or so I thought) on my face. A wave caught me from behind and my mask...

What would get you to dive more?

More time off work, more money, more days with no wind, if neither Nancy or I were ever ill....those should do it.

Teaching family. Good or bad idea?

I taught my older brother, my son, my sister-in-law, and two of my nephews to dive. We had no issues. It all depends on how you relate to each other. I wouldn't hesitate to teach a family member to dive.
