Back mount, side mount, wing, bcd, split fins, non split fins, lions tigers and bears, Oh My!

There are some gear sets that will work in a lot of diving situations. For example, you could dive a full cave set while on a shallow reef. It might be a bit of overkill, but it would work. There are some gear sets that will probably work in a lot of diving situations, but they are not ideal...

    PADI Divemaster Test?

I say it in OW, Rescue, Divemaster, AI, and OWSI, answer the question for how it is written. There are no "trick" questions, but there are some poorly worded ones. Some people will add "what-ifs" or "what about this" to the question and get the wrong answer. In terms of preparation... 1. Did...

Treat every dive like a tech dive

Sticking with the car analogy, a five point harness, a helmet, neck restraint, and a fire suit would make it even safer. Do you use those? Overkill versus an acceptable level of risk is what it comes down to.

    PADI Deep Dive certification

In PADI's DM course, the candidate doesn't have to do the "deep dive scenario" if the candidate has the Deep Diver Specialty. The same concept applies to the Search and Recovery scenario/specialty.

Things they don't teach in SCUBA school

On the mask fogging... I have a lot of students with this same issue. Their mask fogs on Day 1 of the check out dive. I ask if they just smeared some toothpaste in the mask or if they actually used some elbow grease. I describe it as trying to push the toothpaste through the lens with your...

Tank explosion kills one - Cozumel

Nevermind. Just splitting hairs at this point.

Tank explosion kills one - Cozumel

In reading this whole thread, do the tanks actually "explode"? Or is more of a violent rupture? When I head explosion, I am picturing the tank being in thousands of pieces. When I hear rupture, the tank could still be in one piece with a giant split or at most in three or four pieces.

    Woman dead - Florida Keys

Merriam Webster defines "elderly" as being past middle age. They also define "middle age" as about age 40 to about age 60. I don't think the term was used improperly.

Tank explosion kills one - Cozumel

(Emphasis mine) I know that the hydro stamp is a US/Canadian DOT regulation for pressurized cylinders. It isn't a scuba diving regulation. Does Mexico even have this testing requirement for pressurized cylinders?

    Help Needed: Shady Dive Operator?

Our shop has a flat rate AOW. This is based on doing the training dives based on our class schedule and at the local quarry (shore dives). We can do them on Lake Michigan, but the student would then need to foot the bill for the boat costs. I am guessing something similar is happening here.

What is the best shark dive you guys have ever done?

To some of my dive buddies, my best shark encounter was the shark I never saw. It was in the Bahamas. The shark was described as "smaller that me". Since I am 6'-9" tall, that still leaves some room for the shark to be a decent size. I was taking some excellent photos of a loggerhead turtle...

    Understating Qualification on Charter Boats

Bob -I am going to disagree with you here, but it could also just be how it is typed. Just because I am a professional, I do not have an implicit duty to assist in every emergency. To be more specific, I DO have an implicit duty to assist with anyone under my duty of care (i.e. someone with...

What is the best shark dive you guys have ever done?

Darwin Island, Galapagos - hundreds of hammerheads, toss in some Galapagos sharks, whale sharks, and some lemon sharks. All on the same dive.

    Dive Professional

I bolded the part of the quote. I am guessing the Department of Transportation cares if the cylinder has a valid hydro test. I am not an expert on the regulations set forth by the Department of Transportation, or if those regulations even apply to personal transportation of a handful of...

    Medical form: practical/ethical quandary

Go see the specialist this time. Take the basic medical form and the doctor sign off form with you. Have a conversation with the specialist about your condition and the form. Ask the doctor if in his medical opinion based on your current situation, do you need to answer "Yes" on future...

    Diver missing in the Bahamas

I see no reason or logical thinking that one would remove the gear underwater to use as a shield. I definitely wouldn't take off my life support underwater thinking that if a shark grabs it, there goes my air. Second, I would prefer to have the aluminum or steel tank on my blindside. On the...

    which bcd for padi instructor?

For open water, I use a back inflate BCD. Yes, it is a shop brand. I have also owned a BP/W and Jacket BCD. I liked my BP/W, but it didn't work for teaching open water. On the same day, I can go from 70 F water on the shallow side (wetsuit) to 46 F water on the deep side (drysuit). Dealing...

    which bcd for padi instructor?

For the gear exchange, the Instructor Manual specifically states that you are not supposed to swap weights. This means integrated weights (since you are swapping BCD) should not be used. The weights should always stay with the DMC. For the OP, I highly recommend using gear that the student...

    Diver missing in the Bahamas

I know that the reporting of dive accidents and fatalities is usually bad due to diving ignorance by the reporter. A couple of the articles are just horrendous and full of errors and half truths while trying to sensationalize the "shark attack".
