    Hello from Seattle!

Here you go: Puget Sound/Strait of Juan de Fuca halibut seasons and regulations. Spearing is an allowable method during the listed season (page 106 of the '21-'22 rules), but make sure you are careful about your location. There are lots of closures and exceptions, and halibut require a record...

Si-tec vs waterproof silicone neck seal

I have one suit with each, don't think either has torn or been changed. Waterproof suit is from 2012, White's with Si-Tech was retrofitted in 2013-ish. I do not notice a major difference between the neckseals, the waterproof wrist seals tear more easily than the Si-Tech branded ones.

Manual settings and the exposure meter

What metering mode are you in? If you are spot metering something dark, your overall exposure may be fine, but the meter will show negative.

    Pullover dry glove recommendations

Never even tried buying online, sorry. I always just go to the physical location.

    Pullover dry glove recommendations

Been using Marigolds for several years. Marigold latex gloves | Seattle Marine Pulled over Viking/Si-Tech rings, or over Si-Tech quick cuff. You can use them with black side out for the "pro" look, or white side (inside) out for visible signaling. A pair lasts me about a year or 100 dives...

Recommendations for Puget Sound and Hood Canal Diving

There are no operators out there permanently, the dive season is summer only (due to unpredictable weather), and only when there are favorable tidal conditions. Think six, non-consecutive weeks in a good year. No one took a boat out to Neah Bay this year because Neah Bay is on Makah tribal land...

    Sola 1200 Help

I've had this happen with a photo 800 (red light is the same as the 1200), and I only shoot in manual. I will second the notion that a slow shutter speed combined with an open aperture combined with the red light on high can lead to red in the photos. Based on what needs to occur, I've only...

    New aircraft =shorter fly time?

I flew the Dreamliner from Seattle to Narita, our cruising altitude, according to the inflight map, was 42,000 ft. So it may be cheaper to pressurize the cabin more because they can use that to fly at a higher altitude and maintain an 8000 ft cabin. Pressurized to a lower altitude sounds great...

Masters thesis on marine conservation, help/ideas?

You are on to something, and there is lots of research being conducted in the general field, and in Indonesia. Coral Triangle Initiative, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, USAID, UNDEP, UNEP, Oceana, and FAO are all organizations working in the area. Not only do they involve...

Best dome port for the Olympus m4/3 9-18 lens

A larger port may work better, assuming the lens is sitting in the correct place in the dome. One potential issue the 9-18 has is that the end of the lens does extend while zooming, which will change the port's optics. This may not have been a big deal on earlier m4/3 bodies, but the with the...

    Best shops in Seattle/Tacoma area

I don't think I've had a bad experience with any shop in the area, which I think may be a result of the relatively large number of dive shops for the population. They keep each other from having outrageous pricing, or doing anything crazy. I've had great experiences at Tacoma Scuba, Joshua is...

    Nauticam with ikelite strobes?

You pretty much need an adjustable spanner and o-ring grease; unscrew the bulkhead plug, grease the o-ring, screw in the bulkhead until it's tight, but not gorilla tight. Plug the lead attached to the bulkhead into the hotshoe connector, and connect the camera and strobes to test. Takes a couple...

    Nauticam with ikelite strobes?

Or an Ike bulkhead, I've got one in my 7D housing for when I was using it with DS-125s, and I could just use my old Ikelite dual cable. The option that is most cost effective will depend on whether or not you have any cables already. I think the optical solution will end up being the most...

Upgrade from Canon S100 to a SLR

One other thing I should add. You may want to look at mirrorless cameras. My personal favorite, and the one I have most experience with is the micro-4/3 system used by Olympus and Panasonic. Interchangeable lenses with cameras that are not much larger than large point and shoots, and much faster...

Upgrade from Canon S100 to a SLR

Any dSLR from the past 3 years will probably work for you. In terms of your existing lenses, the camera body you choose will be irrelevant. I think what you really want to ask is: "can I use these macro diopters with an SLR, and if so with which lens?"The answer is yes, they will work with any...

    Sea and Sea YS-03

I was a little dubious about the YS-03 when I first saw it, but the more I think about, the more it makes sense, and I think it is actually a much better solution than the YS-02 for a first strobe. As you learn UW photography, it can be very helpful to have a strobe that you can turn on and then...

Suit filed for Carbon Monoxide fatality - Washington state

John, It is possible that this is the reason the agency is named, but I think a more benign reason is more likely. The article states "He and several other student divers were aboard The Sampan, a dive boat operated by Bandito, when it left a dock near Gig Harbor that morning." This implies he...

Suit filed for Carbon Monoxide fatality - Washington state

My experience with local boats is the "DM" on board is there as a deck hand, who often happens to be a dive pro. Their primary job is to help divers in and out of the boat while the captain deals with the currents. It's rare to have rough conditions, so even if there is a strong current running...

What do you think of this setup?

For me, 1000 lumens/light is the minimum I recommend for video, and keep in mind that you want the widest beam possible. You may get away with 60 degrees, but look for 90. toozler- The OP is in Eugene, OR and looking at a green water filter. In the Northern Pacific, there is nothing optional...

    shooting macro with canon 60mm

I keep my strobes on full power and my aperture between 8 and 13. Shutter speed is between 1/160 and 1/250 and ISO is whatever is needed, usually 100. Play with your strobe positioning, mine depend on vis, distance to subject, structures around my subject, and background (color, distance, etc.)...
