to snorkel or not to snorkel

I don't wear one-- it gets in the way as mentioned earlier. I do keep one in my BC pocket however-- you don't know when you might get caught in a current a may have to do some surface swimming...

    How to chose instructor?

Okay -- here is a start: Visit 2 or 3 shops in your area. Talk to the Instructor ( as opposed to just the owner). You won't possibly be able to find out the depth of what the Instructor knows, but you will learn volumes from the way he/she answers your questions, AND the kinds of questions...

    TMJ Help

Well, the 'right way' is..... Even if these symptoms are most pronounced when you dive, they may very well represent an underlying bite/ alignment issue that will probably get worse, not better over time. You should see a dentist for his/her opinion. Meanwhile, a couple of other short term...

    Harvey's Wet suits

Over the years, the quality has been good, albeit expensive. This is an investment-- you should take the time to try on this brand and a couple of others. You should be able to see and feel some differences -- these are subjective in nature. Hopefully, you will get some additional options to...

    What would you have done?

I guess the warning signs are there---- this op sounds like they will put any combination together to make money --SNUBA, snorkeling, etc. This does not have to be a recipe for problems, but consistently, it seems that the best ops focus on execution -- separate diving groups, careful...

    Din vs Yoke

Tanks are tanks. You can get a DIN valve or Yoke valve to screw into the top of the tank. When you go on vacation in the US or Caribbean, you will mostly see Yoke valves. An advantage of the DIN valve to DIN regulator connection is better strength of the connection-- better when you are using a...

What Are Some of the Most Active Programs

Thank you -- the web site looks good. I also saw on tv last week that Sierra does not pay its officers large salaries, like many other 'non-profit' organizations around. I actually agree with Bush on several issues, but no administration has got all issues right.

    Shark Pictures from the Bahamas

These are good pictures. Psychologically, at least, I like this Caribbean Reef type, because their teeth are not obvious. I see the Stuart Cove fish box in the background. One year, I was diving a wreck where the Stuart Cove Op had left a couple of their empty boxes behind the day before. We...

    NITROX Yes or no ???

Additionally, when you see some of the posts of experienced divers who unexplainedly get bent, even with very conservative dive profiles, ... at least using Nitrox gives you one more opportunity to hedge the risk.

    Diving Gulf Shores Labor Day

Did you see the article in USA Today, today? The had an overhead picture taken 100-200 yards offshore at Gulf Shores. There were 50- 75 sharks in a group-- it seems like there has been an abundance of bait fish just off the beach for a few days. Keep your eyes open!

    When to go professional

I agree with you Wendy. Additionally, IMO, there is another criterion as well. I think that attitude is extremely important. An effective dive professional should really want to teach people. I think he/she should be enthusiastic ( not easy after hundreds of classes) and care about improving...

    Trip to Lahaina recomend please

I have not been there myself, but Undercurrent reported that Lahaina Divers consistently and significantly short fills their tanks. I don't usually report what I don't see first hand, but at least consider getting several more positive responses before you decide to go with them-- JMO

    greetings to all from Canada

Welcome! I'm your 'Southern' neighbor in Chicago-- it's good to hear someone describe 34- 60 degree F water as 'moderate'!

    Emergency First Response?

In addition to the good comments above, don't forget that it is important to think beyond the initial course. Unlike everyday dive skills that you repeat on just about every dive, you use the rescue skills infrequently, if ever ( thank goodness). That's why you should retake the course every...

    Pelican 1120 Case

Yep-- Pelican is good for just that purpose. Unfortunately, early in my dive life, I also purchased the 'large' Pelican case for travel. It was a bad idea. The rigid case actually holds less than the large travel bags with the ballistic cloth and padded sides. My bad--
