Struggling to clear my mask during Scuba training.

Be careful that you aren't lifting or breaking the seal on the top of your mask but your instructor should have caught that if that was the case. I always teach to put slight pressure on the top and then exhale through the nose. Even slightly lift the bottom of the mask if need be. And like...

    Internet purchase of Tank

The new take rules definitely run from one end to the other on rules. If you bring a tank to me and it has current inspection stickers but it's empty. It WILL be opened and looked at. I won't do a full inspection but I do want to make sure it is really empty. I didn't inspect it so I don't...

Who travels with a spare mask and why?

I almost always carry a spare. Both are prescription mask. If I don't care to see what I'm doing I'll just grab one out of the rinse bucket or do without.

Rescue Squad saves trapped dam diver - North Carolina

For the victim to be able to remain calm enough to survive is phenomenal. The response time of the rescue squads is not bad either. Carter County Rescue is an hour away from Buckeye Lake on a good day. Make it dark and driving those mountain roads in rescue vehicles is a trick in itself...

    Richard Branson's Blue Hole Trip

Did anyone one else notice the horrible storms and waves? I talked to someone that lives in Belize and they didn't see the storms and horrible weather that was supposedly in the area. Discovery is becoming a big joke lately.

PADI DM 400M freestyle and 15M tread

If you have a question about the standards, ask the instructor that you will be taking the class from. I tried to do a PADI class many moons ago and found out the instructor had his vision of how things should be done. ie; type of stroke for the 400m swim. How the 800 m snorkel could be done...

    Bonaire/Buddy Dive Review

We didn't get to go on a trip this year but a friend and his daughter are there now. I have talked to them and they have had trouble getting the dive shop to give them the amount of weight that they need. They were doing their reef (orientation) dive and needed more weight. When they went to...

    Don't help?

If I see someone that looks like they can use some help, then I'll offer. It is up to them to say yes or no. If I see someone that is doing something totally strange, I may approach them and ask them to explain why they are doing something in a certain manner. I may learn something new that...

Dive knives: Tester's choice or go cheapie?

I go for the "inexpensive" type. Just rub them down with some silicone about once a year to make sure that you can still open them and to help protect them from rusting as much. I think I have used mine about 3 time in over 20 years.

    ssi closing facilities

Wildbill, I'd just drop SSI and go with SDI. Unless there is a need for you to stay SSI. Just tell them that they threw the baby out with the bathwater.

    Dangerous lies?

There used to be a dive shop in Charlotte that would spout more lies than a tree has branches. It started with the $60 dive class but you had to buy your equipment from him. Usually ran about 600 for basics. You had to buy a prescription mask if your drivers license had a glasses restriction...

    Dangerous lies?

There are so many untruths floating around that it will make your head swim. Probably the worst is, if you don't certify with "$$$" agency then you're not a real diver or if you don't use a backplate and wing you'll never be able to dive correctly. I'm sure that most anyone that's been around...

Water temp last couple days in Bonaire

I just got back from Bonaire. My computer was showing 83/84 degrees constantly. If you get cold easily I would suggest using a hood. Keeping your head warm works wonders for the rest of the body.

Recovery diver dead, two others injured searching for body - North Carolina

WBTV just released the findings on the S & R diver, Bradley Long, that drowned in June. He had been doing a search, with a buddy, at 82 feet for about 14 minutes. As they were surfacing Long ran out of air. Apparently the other diver wasn't able to assist Long and another diver went into the...

Buddy Dive - Only 2 tanks at a time?

Never have been hassled over how many tanks we took. Just remember its a small truck and if you're heading north then that will eat a lot of your dive day up just driving around, especially if you think about going into the park.

    ABS 2nd stage

It's cold water rated if used with a sealed Apeks first stage. Their words, not mine. Copies from the link posted by diversteve. "If used with an unsealed first stage then it is only recommended for warm waters, but is suitable for cold water diving when used with any Apeks environmentally...
