    Top shore dives on Oahu?

http://www.shorediving.com/Earth/Hawaii/Oahu/ The general cautions anywhere are car break-ins/vandalism and surf/currents. Waianae dives tend to be shallow, rarely more than 25ft, sloping off to 40ft depths at about 200+yds offshore. Beware of the possibility of a townward bound strong (>3kt)...

Looking for advice for planning a trip to Hawai'i

Speaking only as an Oahuan: During the day, 7-11 crabs hunker deep into reef holes and are very hard to spot. (In the past week, the eastern beaches have been blanketed by thousands and thousands of what's believed to be larval swimming-stage 7-11 crabs; little purplish pea-sized crabs with...

Theft from cars while shore diving Big Island?

I don't think there is a "formula". Never had a prob on the Big Island, taking normal precautions; i.e. leaving nothing in sight and no valuables. On Oahu, I've left my doors unlocked and still got the locks punched...go figure... Basically, I bring the absolute minimum and everything goes...

So you think you've found a bomb, do you bring it up and give it to the lifeguards?

We were there. The newspaper said it was found by a couple of freedivers; apparently FII instructors. That kinda makes a bit of sense because I saw one guy with full suit and longblades coming in thru the Slot from outside at around 9:40. There was a kid with him and so I figured it was a...

Newbie Question: How can I find out the conditions at a dive spot?

Well, I've never yet failed to see Drew's truck up there so he's probably got the place wired. Yes, at Shark's Cove, if you get near or outside of the MLCD line -- just about the 50ft contour -- on rare occasions there can be a fairly strong longshore current pushing toward Waimea Bay...

Can I shore dive Hanamau Bay?

The decision to solo is, of course, your own. The great danger to Hanauma and other Hawaiian beaches, is their apparent lack of any. Whether willful or innocent, lack of respect has a price. I have one save. I do not wish for another.

Can I shore dive Hanamau Bay?

Yes, you can dive it as well described be vbluev and zackss. But it sounds like you're thinking solo and if so, I second selo's concern -- I almost got taken out. It was a nav error compounded by surge and surf; I missed the "Backdoor" exit. I got shoved and pinned by the following surf into...

    Hanauma Bay at night

Sorry for the spiel. Sounds like you're on top of it. I OTOH no longer have the conditioning or the large hairy sack to even think about those kinds of dives. I believe these are the rules&regs for access C&C on Hanauma In my ignorant opinion, coming ashore in Hanauma offhours is a...

    Hanauma Bay at night

Ha! I guess it depends. If you make the beach alive, then punishment enough for blowing your dive plan is having to hump all the way back to your car which has since been ticketed by HPD, towed away, its locks punched and wheels listed on e-auction. OTOH, if you had the bad taste to drown...

    Hanauma Bay at night

Done. Checked with the volunteers topside and down at the beach kiosk this past Friday. No Saturday nights since the furloughs started. No idea if/when it'll resume.

    Haunted Oahu Tour?

We were on Glen Grant's very first tour. His guinea pigs. He was still trying to figure out his routes and so we got the works. Started at the State Library at 19:00 and returned about 23:30. IIRC, we went around downtown, up to Stevenson Intermediate (Hill of Sacrifice), around Manoa and...

    Hanauma Bay at night

It was every 2nd Saturday up until the furloughs kicked in July. The signage at the Bay hasn't changed but odds are, it's been discontinued.

    cavern/cave diving on Oahu

Surf News Network is predicting some pretty good surf up there this weekend; 3-5ft Sat, 6-12ft Sun. There doesn't seem to be any MLCD rules against running lines. Probably nobody even thought about it. But the aesthetics of running line around in a marine reserve doesn't sound right...

    cavern/cave diving on Oahu

I saw a couple Youtube clips of it (keywords Shark's Cove and big surf) and they kind of give you the idea. But IMO, these were on the big-but-not-spectacular side. Or the clips missed the really big sets which can be almost a half hour apart. I've seen it when Waimea was reporting sets of...

    cavern/cave diving on Oahu

Not sure what is the "3rd finger" either. Is it Kulahua Point? (Just beyond that point, on the dry shelf, are several large boulders known as "Pele's followers".) I've been around the point to Pupukea Beach but never ventured more than about 50m from shore. All the way to Pupukea Beach...

    cavern/cave diving on Oahu

I'll be lookin'. Me and the Mrs. are thinking of heading to the Cove about that time. She swims her laps looking for turtles. I do my up'n'down routine looking for bottom crawlers like octopus and frogfish. About an hour or so. Look for a guy with longblades; Cressi 3000LD's. They're...

    cavern/cave diving on Oahu

I've been sightseeing to the Lahilahi ulua "cave" only 3 times; the first time in 1971, the last 1989. Only the first time was there a half-dozen small guys; maybe 15-20#. Squat since then. There are as many "ulua caves" and "moi holes" as there are fishermen and divers/spearos. Of...

    cavern/cave diving on Oahu

In my very limited experience, there aren't any caves or caverns around Oahu that are anywhere comparable to what's in the upper 48. We do have lots of lava tubes but sea action tends to collapse or unroof them. So most of the stuff here tends to be fairly straightforward swim-thrus; e.g...

Disturbing rumour about making Shark's Cove off-limits to divers

...and to think that I remember a time (the 60's) when we had the place almost to ourselves for whole weekends... I suppose that's the greatest regret: Not being able to share what was.

Disturbing rumour about making Shark's Cove off-limits to divers

Access to Hanauma Bay became limited to "preserve" it. Perhaps the same is being murmured for SC which I believe is 2nd in popularity. Best to be patient for more facts.
