time to renew your lobster permit in Mass - with a $15 increase

Government can impose a 37.5% price hike at its will and there's little that can be done, even at the ballot box. RedBox just did a 25% increase but I can vote with my feet for their services.

    Learned the hard way

Glad you made it back to tell a cautionary tale to others that may have similar backgrounds. Calling a dive is never a bad decision. Back Beach and Old Garden Beach in Rockport are also good dive sports for getting acclimated. Jim

Great Scallop dive. Lousy near-death experience.

I happy to read that everyone came through the experience okay. I can not understand why boat designers put in low-cut sterns that enable waves to break over them and flood the hull. The boat that left that large wake bears some responsibility for your mishap as well.

Diving Old Garden Beach on Wednesday

Great conditions today. The winds were minimal and from the SW and the tide was on its way out. While viz was a bit murky it wasn't worth a complaint. Many thanks to Jim Cook for being a great dive buddy and helping out an old timer. Looking forward to going again soon.

    Old Garden Beach

Good for you for helping the fellow out. Sometimes newbies try to fight the ocean and simply wear themselves out. There is usually a bit of a current running N->S at OGB but if you know to head out in the right direction then it is not a problem getting back in. My buddy and I helped several...

Kayak Dive to The USS New Hampshire 10-14-12

Looks like a good setup. What do you do with regard to adding air to your BC or drysuit? Reminds me of the old days of manual inflation before power inflators came along. My horse-shoe BC even had a CO2 cartridge for emergency inflation. Jim

Kayak Dive to The USS New Hampshire 10-14-12

Your post was intriguing. Were you able to go and how did things work out? Although I have a SOT kayak, I've never tried diving from it. Where do you usually launch from? How does the gearing up process work? Thanks, Jim

BTW, your customer ID, from which your new numbers are derived, will change if you do not renew your license for a year. Happened to me. While you're on the site, if you're over 60 (sigh) you can get a free saltwater fishing permit. Just have to pay a processing fee which is less thatn $2...
