    speargun opinions wanted

If its a first gun, or even second or third, I recommend a Biller. For shooters with more experience a Riffe or one of the custom solutions (such as the Wong gun) is the best way to go. Since you've asked this question I'll assume you're not terribly experienced. Biller guns give an excellent...

    Prescription Masks on Key Largo?

Divers Direct has closed down, actually become part of a big general water-sports place at MM 100. In any case they don't rent. The possible options are Ocean Divers, Capt Slate's Atlantis, Sea Dwellers, and Quiessence. These are the bigger and better equipped shops and one of them might be able...

Another callout but not a good ending

I also lost one yesterday, car wreck, not dive accident. I'm now 0 for 3 on CPR. WW

my diver friend died diving today.

Pete, if you're referring to things I said, please consider that long ago rescinded. WW

    Proper Weighting

String is correct. 10% will be too much weight on nearly everyone, certainly everyone who is using proper technique. WW

    PMs CENSORED ?

While I agree in concept, its already been stated, accurately, by Natasha, that the board owners don't have the choice to put the filter on only portions of the board. Unless they want to institute an "adults only" access policy to the entire board they have no option but to use the filter. Its...

    PMs CENSORED ?

Natasha is correct though, the software doesn't allow you to have the net-nanny on for forums but not for PMs. Its an all or nothing deal. It would be a nice feature though, perhaps a future version of V-Bulliton will add it? WW

Why does everyone say the snorkel is useless?

Its worth a lot because its honest. They don't get in the way and they don't create drag. They simply don't look cool and nobody wants to not look cool (rule 6 ya know?) so they all parrot the reasons they've heard others give for not wearing them. If you're doing penetration dives, sure, its...

Why does everyone say the snorkel is useless?

Its become fashionable lately to be vehemently opposed to wearing a snorkel. Its simply not cool to wear one and sheep will be sheep.... Personally I think its foolish to allow inexperienced divers to get in the water without one and I also think that anyone who openly discourages snorkel use...

    not a diving accident but.......

I'm not a cop but I used to ride bikes and I once T-boned a car very similarly to the wreck pictured. I'm going to guess he was going a bit faster than Wendy suggested. I'd say about 70 at impact. WW

    Yet another dumb bp/w question...

It works because the wing tacos up when you put gas in it, making the valve a high point. If it were on the top you'd have a time reaching it. WW

Good dives for a Rec diver

there's a few more than 3.... Here's some info http://uboat.net/fates/dive/dive_us.htm plus the one in California that Kendall Raine wrote about recently on this board I believe.

Is learning to dive on your own safer than learning with an instructor?

When they don't we read about in the paper, thankfully not such a common occurence as it once was. There will always be folks who choose to ride the short bus <shrug> WW

Is learning to dive on your own safer than learning with an instructor?

Yea, I think I could but then again I was an instructor for 10 years. The things I learned about how to teach in my ITC were much more valuable than the things I learned about how to dive there. Mentoring does work well, after the basics are taught properly. Arguing for mentoring at this...

Is learning to dive on your own safer than learning with an instructor?

Its not written for idiots, its written for children, 12 year olds to be exact. You know why? No, not because that's how old you had to be to take a class when it was written, but because extensive research showed that that was the basic conprehension level of the average o/w student...

Is learning to dive on your own safer than learning with an instructor?

Yep, there are bad instructors, plenty of them. However, even a bad instructor is better than trying to figure it out on your own. I would have thought this a no-brainer but then again I remember some discussions with some pretty "special" members here. WW

    Boat Etiquette...

Its common practice. Those of you who are complaining simply don't take boat rides with people who take a lot of boat rides. Dry suit divers do this regularly, its the best way to rinse a drysuit. WW
