Apeks Tek 3 Cold / Deep Water

My husband dives these regs in the Great Lakes. He's had them for about two years. They've been beyond 200' in 39 degree water and have performed wonderfully. He also likes the hose routing because it points everything down out of the way with no odd kinks or bends.

Uwatec Wet Button and Smart Z Questions

I have a SmartTec and before that a Uwatec AirZ, and nearly all of my diving is done in a drysuit with ZipGloves. The computer cannot be activated with the gloves on, even if you lick your fingers. I just got in the habit of taking the top part of my drysuit off and making any gas setting...

    Crystal and Platte lakes

My folks had a place on Big Platte Lake, and I dove there a couple of times from shore. It was quite a swim to get to any depth. I never did find much of anything to see, but I'm one of those who would be happy blowing bubbles in a mud puddle. ;)

If you are a new diver, please read this

Nope. My husband and I do that when we teach OW. Student divers are told to expect to do five OW dives during their certification weekend. The first four dives (assuming all standards are met) get them certified. Then we hit a topic we've touched on all weekend: "Tables and computers let...

    Ice at Gilboa?

I dove Gilboa on Saturday, 3/7. When we arrived, the water was open except for a very thin sheet of crispy ice near the docks. My group of four used Dock #2 and there were a couple of divers down on Dock #5. By mid-afternoon when we finished our last dive, the ice was all but gone.

    Sea Cure Mouth Piece

I love my SeaCure! No jaw tension or pain, no matter how long the dive. Wish I had one for snorkeling, too.

    DUI Zip Gloves

A Great Lakes diver, I've been diving with the blue ZipGloves ever since I bought a drysuit. While dexterity was an issue the first few dives, a little practice quickly took care of that. As a DM and later an instructor, I've switched out regulator hoses, replaced o-rings and fixed many other...

    Hauling Tanks

Found an interesting article on the topic from a seemingly credible source: Cylinders & Manifests Seems the key differentiator is whether cylinders are being transported for commercial use. The article included the Department of Transportation HAZMAT Help Line number: (800) 467-4922.

    Gilboa quarry accident

EMS was called for a female Open Water dive student who experienced chest pains and difficulty breathing after ascending from a short dive on the training platform (~20'). Diver was put on O2, but symptoms didn't improve. Both ambulance and helicopter were dispatched and arrived within minutes...

Spare Air have you tested? Do you Dare? Do you care? Really what's in there?

I own a 3 cu.ft. SpareAir, bought dirt cheap but quickly set aside with a number of "seemed like a good idea at the time" purchases made in the early years. I did a couple of tests at 70' at a quarry. The reg worked about as I expected at depth...didn't breathe as smoothly or easily as the...

Newly certified diver OOA at Gilboa

Here are some details about the OOA incident that were relayed to me by a diver that was part of her group. Sharing here because they offer several lessons learned...something this thread doesn't often provide. First off, the diver is fine. She underwent precautionary chamber treatment and...
