Not the first option but I would if I had to. I've thought and discussed this with others before. Just another tool to have in your toolbox.
Your likely have to disassemble two regs, the one that failed and the one you swapped it with but that's sometime you do what you have to do.
Been there a few times and have always stayed in Akumal as a friend knew someone with a house there. We were right off Half Moon Bay and could snorkel just walking out the back. Dove with Akumal Dive Shop. There were always good to us but the person in our group has been diving with them for...
My 2 cents. I dive a DSS rig. I have a SS plate and two wings a small single tank 26 lbs and a larger doubles wing. I have some Oxycheq mini single tank adapters. The DSS wings/plates can be set up nicely for single tanks without an adapter I just find it easier to switch between singles and...
Did the same thing last year. Threw on a set of double AL80's for a quarry dive since they had air in them and my steels where apart for hydro. Getting in and out of the water seemed so easy.
Like you the gas of double 80's falls short next to my HP 119's.
I've done a few fossil dive in NC. All of them have been on the ledge which is several hour boat ride off shore. Great diving on good days, OK diving on bad days but the ride out will get you.
IMHO the ledge is the best place to find large megalodon teeth in the country. I've done Venice...

As others have said every a simple SPG with a bolt snap and computer/BT on wrist is the way to go.
If your just doing simple rec. dive use what works for you though. If you thinking of getting into "tec" diving you will find yourself moving to the wrist mount stuff with a simple SPG soon enough.
You will also need plugs to plug where the manifold screws into each valve. Of course, the tank will be empty at this point. Really a PIA to break down doubles and then put them back together. I hate doing it for hydro's.
Diving isn't like hiking, you want the waist strap higher.
Since your 6' 3" you could use the extra long plate Tobin sells. Check out DDS. Their plate is a little more expensive, but I like how they are designed myself. Really though you should be able to make you regular plate work just...
I think your local shop is recommending what they sell. Any real discussion about multi-gas deco computers that doesn't include Liquivision and Shearwater is misleading.
FWIW I would go with Shearwater but then I've been using their product since the Pursuit with nothing but good things...
I've seen a few regs fail. All in cold water and they all failed open. They all also emptied the divers tank in just a few minutes. Once saw a divers primary start free flowing and then they backup did the same. All these failures expect one where diving in water around 38 degrees. I...
If a few extra pounds is causing problems your really going to be in trouble when you have a student that starts to go up or down and you need to control them.
We do weight checks with students before the first dive, but I always overweight myself for OW classes so I can more easily control a...
I don't carry extra spring straps. Don't even own an extra pair and I have extra's of almost everything.
As long as it's all metal connections I wouldn't worry. If you have the spring straps that use plastic buckle to attach to the fin that could be a problem. I've never seen a issue with...
Your SSI OW will satisfies the PADI prerequisite for the PADI AOW class. After completing and passing the PADI AOW class you receive a PADI AOW card. At this level it really doesn't matter who you OW or AOW cert is with.
My OW was with PADI. AOW and other certs with PADI. I also have an SDI...
