Question How old are you and how long certified? Poll- please take part!

I'm 63, got my first certification (NASDS) in 1976. Lots of diving until the early eighties then my career got in the way. Got back into diving in 2011, got hooked on the great lakes wrecks—that led me down the path to tech diving ~ 2000 dives since then.

    Lightweight alternative to Jet fins

I have the Eddys, Slipstreams and Jets. The OMS and Deep Six are lighter than the Scubapros. I found the foot pocket on the Deep Six fins very uncomfortable on long dives—I have high arches, the stiff foot pocket dug into my insteps (a couple of my dive buddies had the same problem). The OMS are...

    Revo vs JJ

The American instructors can still give the OP a well informed opinion regarding both units, and (or) recommend an instructor in Europe that teaches revo and jj.

    Revo vs JJ

I suggest getting in touch with an instructor that teaches both units. Mel Clark and Rob McGann are two that I know of…

    Slim DSMB or Wide DSMB

I've been using one of the 'H' pink slim DSMBs for quite some time now. I've used it on many drift deco dives, a few captains have mentioned how easy it was to spot. If you're inflating the buoy with an LP BC hose I've found the 'H' brand connectors work best. I think you can buy those...

Pompano Dive Center and charters going out of business...

Sad news. PDC was a great dive operator. I'm going to echo Dsxix36's comment above, a bunch of great people are now out of a job. I'd like to thank them for many safe, fun trips. Also wishing them the best of luck.

    First rebreather choice

Hello, there are many, many, many threads on this subject here and all over social media. View any advice, particularly the most ardent posts—either pro or con any unit, with a grain of salt. Look for unbiased opinions, here's my (attempt) at an unbiased response… there's a lot to be said for...

In memory of Rich Courtney, fellow Cayman Cowboy and cave instructor

Very sad news. I did open circuit cave traing with Rich five years ago. We remained friends since then. Condolences to his precious daughter and the rest of his family.

    Liked DSS, now what?

I like the Halcyon LP hose connectors, I use their pink six foot slim marker for drift deco dives, a few captains have commented on how easy it is to spot. Nice size when rolled up too, doesn't take up much pocket space.

Two German divers drown at Gran Cenote Kalimba at Tulum

Thank you Izze. It's a very well written report. Recommended reading for cave divers of all experience levels.

    Fiona Sharp death in Bonaire

Possible, yes, but a very bad idea. No one I know with the training to to dives in the 300' range would consider it.

    Fiona Sharp death in Bonaire

If the reports regarding diluent and bailout are accurate I agree that it is unlikely that a 90m dive was her plan.

How common is solo RB diving?

Pretty common. A lot of my RB dives are solo, I carry at least two bailouts on any solo dives with a deco obligation.

    Tech Dives on Recreational Charters

Regarding the follow up question by lukeb. The SE FL tech. charters that I've been on have all been single dive AM trips. Dive masters discuss run times with the divers, on the trips I've been on these run times have typically been between 80 and 110 minutes. As for doing two tech profiles on...

    Tech Dives on Recreational Charters

Lot's of good advice in previous posts. As kensuf says 'talk up front', many tech friendly charters in Florida, just be clear about your run times and make sure they will allow you to dive solo (if that's what you intend to do). After I got my first tech certifications I did a lot of the double...
