    HOG First Stage Regulator question

That could very well explain why my recent email to customer service was ignored. Chris was always very prompt in discussing replacement parts & wanted to know how something broke. Edit: I'll try to contact the dealer I got it from. but at that time I bought it HOG was in the same building in...

    Shallowest dives

The "lakes" on Rainier are something I would love to dive. Supposedly they were dived in the 70's, but there isn't much info on that. It would be a very unique ice/cave/altitude dive, but it's hard to find anyone willing to haul the dive gear and mountaineering gear up ~9000ft and camp on the...

To certify or not to certify

About the only reason I would recommend most AOW classes is if you happen to go to a dive operation that requires them for deeper dives, which does happen some places. The only other reason is to work towards a Divemaster rating.

    What did Santa bring you?

New drysuit zipper and a hydro. At least my dives will be dry now

Another Newbie 'What About This Gear?' Post

As a former Michigan diver (and still in cold-water diving) I would split my comments into two directions. First I think I would ask if you intend to dive in Michigan after your class, or if you intend to dive mostly on warm water trips? If you stick to warm water trips, I think everything...

Are 5mm gloves too thick to hand pick crabs?

I've used 3, or 5 with no problem in Puget Sound at ~50F water temps. For me, the glove flexibility is less important than the method & glove material. I start by approaching slowly and then push them down into the sand so they can't run. At this point you have plenty of time to get a good...

    7D vs G-12 .. is it worth it ?

Those are some nice bird shots I'm well aware of the many factors, but to achieve a similar focal length & perspective, the DSLR will normally have less depth of field. It can be very difficult to get really shallow depth of field on a P&S. Based on azscubadudes's bird shots, I suspect he is...

    7D vs G-12 .. is it worth it ?

Looking at many of your photos you linked to, I notice you have a number of shots of smaller fish and towards the macro end of UW photos. One point to consider id depth of field for the two cameras. Your G12 will have more depth of field and may have more consistently in-focus shots. The 7D...

    SDI/TDI Dive Master program

As previously mentioned, the SSI course is accepted. I would also mention that my instructor asked me to take or assist in several of his courses (including rescue) to both get a better feel for the instruction style of the shop and as experience with students.

Why would you get a Solo Cert?

Yes, my DM instructor is covering all the Solo material as a part of the DM course so the card is just a small fee and may prove useful on someday. No, I already dove most dives as a self-reliant diver, and the only solo dives I did before were shallow dive where no one else wanted to dive that...

    100% 02 during your SI?

There is a relevant article in the first issue of this online diving magazine Tech Diving Mag | Free online technical diving magazine . They discuss the use of oxygen to off-gas before a flight. As I recall they didn't see a very big improvement for the technical dives simulated.

I'm not sure how to do a warhammer in a dry suit?

Just look at a photo from a freshwater muck dive with 1 foot vis.

    Looking at Regulators

I would agree. Moreover, I feel this should apply to any diving course and I suspect you would agree, Jim.

    Looking at Regulators

I'm not sure how proficient one can get doing something once or twice a year, but I hear you. Just a note about the HOG class. I was told a while back that the "technical diver certification" requirement for the class is not meant to keep people out. More to make sure students are serious...

    Looking at Regulators

There are many available opinions about which regulator to use. I'll mention a few things you should consider. 1. ScubaPro are highly recommended, and I don't think they could be poor choice. An expensive choice, but a reputable product. 2. ScubaPro typically has a good parts warranty...

    Dive House

I dove with dive house a few years back. It was pretty standard. We had one good DM and one bad DM (Not that we really needed a DM, but he didn't notice that 2 of his group of 5 divers didn't finish the dive with him until we told him after the dive.) I was appreciative that a few larger...

    GEM recreational rebreather

Kiss Rebreathers and Boosters I'd be careful about calling anything idiot proof. Life finds a way. "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." - Albert Einstein I'm told the GEM is an improvement because the bubbles are smaller...
