    TSandM -- Lynne Flaherty

Peter, you have my deepest sympathies. I never met you or Lynne in person, but we interacted consistently online. She was a good person and she will be missed.

Last Years recap and new years dive resolution

This year I didn't dive much (spending quality time with my now 15 month old son), so my *hope* for 2013 is to make... say at least 10 fold as many dives as my 2012 total. The 100mm is a wonderful portrait lens, but as Bob mentioned less versatile for underwater use.

    Is "fixing" photos cheating??

These days, I mostly take pictures of my son. Setting aside my obvious bias as to subject matter, here's of I particularly like. When I took this picture, the yellow ball behind and to his right didn't look like a blur, nor the did the adjacent toy, nor did his ears for that matter. But it...

Considering new Nikon D7000 - would appreciate comments/alternatives

I don't suspect we'll see much of an improvement in DR until they go to 16-bit A2D. The Sony exmor sensors that Nikon uses in the 3100/7000/600/800/maybe others has such a low read noise that it's near the theoretical maximum DR for 14 bits (i.e. 14 stops). The Sony partnership has really...

    A Hard Day's Dive

Probably because the light source from above the water is a might bit more powerful (direct sunlight rather than reflected).

    Is "fixing" photos cheating??

Global, meaning if you have some ambient sun lit subject and some artificial strobe lit subject, your contest wouldn't allow selective white balancing?

    Sh*t Scuba Divers Say

It's cold, dark, barren, surgey, swelly with 3 foot viz, but my gear is already wet so i'm committed.

    Is "fixing" photos cheating??

Awesome story. Me too, mostly. While I'd love to have the ability to do really slick stuff in photoshop (let alone darkroom), it's not my goal so I've never really learned. I use photoshop to stitch panoramas and occasionally to use a neutral layer for dodging and burning, but over 99% of my...

    Is "fixing" photos cheating??

That begs an interesting question. Most people can dodge and burn in a dark room, and many can mask. Some, however, (Jerry Eulsmann my best example) can do very sophisticated stuff. So, if I can't do it in a darkroom (lack of skill), but it CAN be DONE in a darkroom, where does that leave us...

    Is "fixing" photos cheating??

I've never really bought that "a picture should be what you saw" . Maybe if you're a documentary photojournalist, but most of us aren't. On photo forums, that adage is common, and often uttered by people who then post their desaturated images of things with millimeter wide depths of field. Maybe...

    Baggage Fees

I agree, flat fees make little sense. Fares and fees should correlate to how much weight you actually are transporting (luggage and bodies). Charging 200 bucks for 51lbs and 50 bucks for 49 makes as much sense as charging an 8 year old girl the same as her 400lb body building dad.

Canon EOS T2i and Setting White Balance Underwater

I've never used the T2i, but I'd be surprised it it took 45 seconds to meter WB. I do indeed do it in literally seconds with my cameras (5D2 and 40D). They're always set to manual WB. I shoot something neutralish that fills the spot meter circle, I hit menu, and since I always leave the set...

    Agencies?

I actually only own one stage. It has permanent 160s. I duct tape over it and write in 100 for 32. I've never used 18/45 in a stage, but if I do chances are I'd be diving with Rainer and I'd mark 200 for consistency (though i'd prefer 190). I would have no problem going out to Florida (or...

    Agencies?

Seems that you either have a bunch of jokers who mark their bottles how they please or a bunch of yahoos who dive their bottles however they please. Pick your poison.

    Redondo Artificial Reef Report

I mean from a wreck/structure perspective. In the face of your pics, I'd be hard pressed to say the wildlife is lacking (though I've seen neither molas nor sea lions on it)
