- At least 2 SD cards
- Macbook Air and card reader to review and save (the battery life on the Air is great for watching movies on long flights or during down time on the liveaboard)
- Portable HD or USB drive for backup
- If there's wifi available on the boat or at stops along the way...
Thanks to everyone for your replies! They've been very helpful wrapping my head around this stuff!
I'm a warm water travel diver so my having consistent gear that's not too heavy are my priorities. The physics and stability of a bp+w are appealing over a back-inflate. I guess the Ride is...
I've read black silicon is preferred over clear for tunnel vision and to limit distractions. Are there reasons why you choose one mask type over the others for underwater photography?
What are the significant differences between the two? Is the Ride a wing or a back-inflate? To my amateur eye, the Hollis Ride could be a donut wing with bungees, a Hollis Solo harness and backpad.
A BP/wing can be disassembled and parts can be upgraded in modular fashion. I suspect that since...
If you'll be in Japan Amazon.co.jp has an English-language option and you can ship to your hotel. Gull has the English version of their catalogue up on their website if you need more info. To give an idea on sizing, I use the same 5mm boot with the Gull Supermew XX (size M/JP 25-26/US 7-8/EU...
I started off just renting and started getting my own equipment after getting my advanced open water. I started off cheap but started buying better equipment after getting better acquainted with the different options and the kind of diving I like to do. I still have my original snorkel but I've...
Yeah the prices in Japan are CRAZY. The price of an XTX50 octopus alone was the same as an XTX first _and_ second stage in the U.S.!
Thanks for the heads-up on prices in Manila. I was checking out prices for dive lights and strobes and the prices in Manila were competitive with U.S. and Hong...
I'm in Seoul but I've also scoped out prices in Japan and Thailand since I have trips to both upcoming. The Apeks selection at mic21.com is limited and prices are up in the nose-bleeds. Kakaku.com isn't much better. There's a promo in Thailand that is actually not bad: XTX50 regulator and...
The pricing from the international distributors I checked out is… beyond my budget, to put it mildly.
So I'll be sticking with online U.S. retailers or eBay and having the gear reshipped to me overseas. Prime Scuba seems to be another authorized dealer for Apeks.
I'll be buying Apeks as my first regulator and this summary definitely helped me wrap my head around all the different models and decide on the XTX50. Thanks to the OP!
Can anyone point to an online U.S. retailer that is also an authorized dealer of Apeks/Aqualung besides scuba.com?
No halos or problems with night vision. I did have problems with dry red eyes my first winter but I was warned it could be a problem during the battery of pre-surgery eye tests. It has gotten progressively better since. I found a surgeon with a lot of surgeries under his belt using quite...
Thank you for your reply! By future-proof I mean that I'm looking for something that'll improve the photos I take with what I currently have but won't go obsolete when I move to a new setup. Since I can't buckle down and choose between stills and video, I'll probably have separate camera setups...
I'm looking to upgrade my dive photo gear and am looking for advice what to get next. Currently I have a Canon S100 with Canon housing. Since I'm looking to upgrade the camera in 2015 to the next Sony RX100 model or GoPro, I'm looking for something future-proof and useable with the new gear...
I want to replace the rubber straps on my Gull fins. Gull sells them in Japan for about $90 ouch. Supposedly spring straps for Apollo fins will also fit Gulls so I'm wondering if anyone has tried using generics (or Oceanic spring straps) on their Apollos or Gulls.
So I went to Japan and picked up a pair of white Gull Super Mew XX. Size M fin (7-8US/39-41EU/25-26JP) works well for me (7US) with a 5mm hard-sole boot. Boot fits mostly in the foot pocket with no lateral movement.
I was going to grab some spring straps but then I ran across a sale on Seawing...
I'll be going to Japan next week so I'm dropping by a dive shop to pick up some fins. I confirmed they have stock on the following fins:
Scubapro Seawing Nova, white (for visibility and photography). These fins weren't initially on my shortlist since I wanted a standard paddle fin to add more...
Thanks for your answers so far! The posts here and on other threads such as for the Aries Accel have been a great help. I'm still wavering on which to choose but I'll update on my experience when I've had to try out the stuff.
I'm looking to upgrading from my Oceanic Shadow to one of these Hollis masks. Would love to try both in person but I'm limited to ordering online. There's tons of user reviews for the M1 but not so much for the M3. My first instinct is to get the M1 since it's similar to the Oceanic Shadow that...
