Welcome to the newest and oldest US National certification agency!

Thanks for the update. I was first certified some 40 years ago in the YMCA program via Explorer Scouts. Growing up on Long Island Sound at that time, the water was green and viz about 5' on a good day, so I lost interest in it for years. Picked it up again a couple of years ago at our local...

    Prostate Cancer Awareness month

Hi A.D. et al... I am a PC survivor now just about 11 months post-op after having a RLRP (Robotically Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy) last November. As I'm sure you know there is a wealth of info out there and I would recommend you research and read and talk to as many people as...

    Ixtapa Zihuatanejo?

Anybody gone diving there? I have a trip coming up in early April. Who's good, what's to see?

    pony bottles

Why would a guy with less than 25 dives be going 120' over a wreck? How many breaths do you think you'd get at 120' out of your 19cf? (I bet somebody here would invest the energy to do the math...) And if your even anxious about your situation, how long do you think it would take you to...

    Bonne Terre Mine Review 1/07

Went there this weekend with 4 others from the Chicago Scuba Meetup.com group. A good time, but definitely pricey at $65 a dive! On the other hand it's almost understandable when you consider they have to pay a guide/leader and maybe 2 or 3 safety divers for each trail depending on the size of...

    Post your best diving tips!

To protect the silky lining of your wetsuit, buy a small piece of cotton felt at a fabric store and cut it to fit over the velcro hooks on the neck seal. Stays put well enough to prevent the velcro from scuffing up the silk while dressing; yet easy to remove and small enough to tuck into your...

Good BC for a new, 13 year-old diver?

These guys sell exclusively direct to divers off their website, so if that makes you nervous forget about it. But I know they have extremely well priced BCD's in junior sizes for about 1/3 of what you'd pay in a LDS. Being a budget minded fellow and rather new to the sport I shopped around...

How to measure buoyancy of my new wetsuit...?

Hey gang, Well my new BARE Velocity 7/6 finally came, and I got it wet 2 weekends ago. I am not in any way disappointed. Being rather "middle aged American" in size and weight, I had tried on all the suits I could find in all the LDS's I could find, and BARE's XLShort has proved to be my...

Question for those who use skins under wetsuits

Yeah man! My Henderson Hotskin makes all the diff. in the world. Though I understand many get along fine by spraying themselves down with a solution of water and hair conditioner (50/50). The hair conditioner is real slippery stuff. I would worry about it affecting the suit though, or...

    7mm Hood with Zipper?

I just got a new Velocity fullsuit, but without the hood. Looking at the BARE catalog, I see they have hoods with and without zippers. Why would you want a zipper on a hood? Seems to me like a quick and painful means to lose more hair!

    Google Video

Hello everyone, This may be old news to you, but I was pleasantly suprised yesterday to search the word "scuba" on Googles new "video" site. LOTS of interesting stuff to see i(albeit n a 3 inch window,) but still fun to to look at. Check it out. And it's another venue to post all your...

The New (2006) Bare 7mm Velocity

Well, Ladies and Germs the big day FINALLY came and when I got home last nite there was a nice brown box waiting on my door step... My new 2006 Bare Velocity 7/6 had landed! Of course the first thing I did was try it on, and while it was a struggle at first, I did get it zipped up (albeit with...

The New (2006) Bare 7mm Velocity

When my suit got backordered, I got an email from Bare which gave me an email address to respond to for customer service. I asked that very same question about is the suit really of a newer "stretchier" material and they wrote back assuring me that it is: "Hi Jim Yes the suit is a new...

Log books... how often do places ask to see them?

I understand that Bonne Terre Mines requires you to show them your log book and that they make you watch a safety video and then test your basic buoyancy skills in 20' of water before they take you into the mine. They're the most particular place I've ever heard of.

    Wetsuit Layering

Yeah, I would guess that if you Googled the phrase "rubber clothing" or "rubber underwear" you'd find a BUNCH of places willing to outfit you! Look out for the mistress' whip though!

The New (2006) Bare 7mm Velocity

Has anyone else bought this suit? I just ordered one, and learned that I'll have to wait a month because my size is on backorder. I'm only 5'7" and 200#, so my options were few without paying (and waiting) for custom tailoring. I was able to try on a 2005 Bare Arctic in the XLS size, and got...

    Agency comparisons

I just want to toss the YMCA cert into the discussion. They ARE the original certifying agency in the country, and many Y's do offer classes that adhere to the highest standards of safety and instruction for a most reasonable cost. My basic OW class took 10 weeks of 1.5 hour class sessions...

    Lobster at what depth?

When I was a kid growing up on Long Island Sound I used to work on Great Captain's Island. The island was (and still is) a park owned by the Town of Greenwich, CT and I would get picked up every AM by the super on the island at the police dock in town. The super had 13 lobster pots that we'd...
