Mythbuster testing "James Bond Tux in a Drysuit" myth...

Awesome! Where in Stockholm were you diving that day? Those canals always looked clean enough to dive and there must be treasure to be found. My closest friend was denied the Nobel Prize for Literature when he had the bad taste to die four days before the announcement. (the Nobel is not...

Mythbuster testing "James Bond Tux in a Drysuit" myth...

I actually had this problem. The very same day I took my IE I had to don a tux and accept a Tony award. You have no idea how badly I wanted to walk to the podium in my drysuit and unzip the sucker revealing my tuxedo on live television. Sadly, I wimped out and changed garments in a...

Redundant air sources and the new diver

there is a placebo effect that can help a new diver calm down and focus on the dive....being aware of EVERYTHING...not just swimming in a state of angst because they are in fear of OOA. A placebo? "A placebo is a sham or simulated medical intervention that can produce a placebo effect. In...

    Dive Rite dilemma

If you don't know why you would want either why not get neither? Look into a simple plate with a few feet of webbing and some simple hardware. Get a wing to go with it and leave all the padding and plastic behind. Just a thought.

    Do we need instructors?

Instructors could be done away with in seconds if the mentors you describe all establish basic standards that would allow the dive community to agree on the mastering of the knowledge and skills required for the goals and tasks desired by the student in each underwater hurdle. From open water...

He clearly asked for "The Good, Bad and Ugly" responses to his question. It was a question debated endlessly here and some of us decided to cut to the chase and put forward our thoughts in the most direct manner. As he seemed to be a grown up with a real understanding of the consequences...

The last time you had an OOA situation your buddy consumed 1400 psi from your tank on an ascent from 105fsw and yet lived. After learning from this experience you have created an emergency gas plan that requires you to "hand off" a 19cft back mounted pony to your buddy and then "they are on...

    Stroke & Diving

I do know of one board member that dives often in spite of having had a stroke when she was quite young. It does not seem to slow her down at all. Of course that is hardly real medical advice but I thought you might find it encouraging.

What we are trying to illustrate is when it comes to many issues regarding safety and practicality the dive industry has done a very good job designing and selling expensive gagets that are at best impractical and at worst outright dangerous. I second the idea you ask on a technical forum the...

Unless he can rotate his head like Linda Blair and his arms are mounted on his torso backwards the sling method is going to work best for him.

    Bail up bottle Back up

Manifolded doubles have a greater redundancy as you have two regulators connected to the same large air source (double tanks) and in the case of a leak or freeflow the ability to shut off either regulator and preserve the majority of the gas in the two tanks. You can also shut off the air flow...

Because so far the suggestions he has to do what he wants to do include either having to remove his BC, independant doubles or having to pull at least one (in in the other case two) aircraft pins (behind him) just to get the thing removed from his gear. All that while his buddy is freaking out.

If he's not he should be. (but he is) As far as a quick disconnect that you can operate with one hand behind your back, remove a 19cft pony and "hand it off" to a distressed diver? The best real world experience you are going to get is to not do this in the first place.
