Been a long while since I ran out of air (or close to it) on a dive but my experience is that it's noticeably difficult to breathe from the reg and the reg can hum or make a different noise when you're low on air.

I don't know but the guy leading the dive convinced everyone on board that under no circumstances should you pee in your wetsuit on this dive because you could have something big catch a whiff of you and come investigate... I think I'm traumatized still!
