    UK Cyl tests

Ok not too familiar with the old regulations for CE marked cylinders over here. In the US (where I learned to dive) I was used to annual VIP's and 5 Yearly Hydro's, What's the deal here in the UK (Now that I have returned home), How often and how much should it cost me? Who can do it? Does...

Simple way to cast lead weight - teflon pan

Been casting it for years, without a respirator... I just stand up wind, or use positive ventilation (a fan). I don't think that the PTFE pan is a huge issue, I know that there are potential poisonous gas issues with over heating PTFE, but I figure it must be pretty moot given the distribution...

    Leg Floatation Devices

I too sink by the feet naturally, esp. in a wetsuit.. Try diving a Backplate and a wing, this will get your weight up higher on your torso. The plate being close to your back does not really kill your righting moment when swimming. The tank should be high enough that the reg does ding you...

What can you make out of neoprene?

As lots have said, gluing and melco will fix anything in neoprene. I've made hoods, sprayskirts, and glue on pockets from neoprene in the past. I fail to see how a tear is unrepairable... YMMV of course... worst case you could make some smelly mouse mats! But that's a waste of good rubber. R

    Compression test tank?

I've made a few.. The first was a piece of 3" sch80 PVC pipe, though SCH40 would work. I cut it square (on the lathe) cut out two plastic endcaps, made some rubber gaskets and used tie rod style bolts (1/4-20) x 4. to clamp it together. You can either drill and tap for an LP quick...

    Improvised Reel/Spool for line laying.

Here's a fun picture of me at Philips' Lake, Me. This is an "at the dive site" solution to needing a reel capable of holding several hundred feet of line. Total project cost: Reel $0.00 Line $borrowed from buddy :) Grand total: $0.00 i.e. the right price. worked like a charm too. In...

DIY Buoyancy Compensators / Wing / Air Cell

Of course road signs are the traditional source for backplate materials... Some ballistics cloth, some webbing, some grommets, a zipper, an inner tube, add a power inflater hose assembly... should do the job, oh and a few hours on the sewing machine, If i get a few spare hours i might just have...

    DIY soft weights

How does the weight perform. I'm thinking that the interstitial spaces must contain something lighter than lead, call it air, vacuum, whatever. What do these baby's weigh in water? Also does the vacuuming out not cause the whole package to stiffen like a bean bag? Is there any advantage to...

    DIY soft weights

I used 2 layers of net curtain that I had lying about in my sewing box. This was very effective. I sewed up a pouch, turned it inside out and poured through a small filler gap in the stitching about an inch long. I then bar tacked across the opening with teh machine. Been doing fine for...

    Conshelf yoke thread specs?

Cool, good for you.. send some pics when you get a chance :) I started work on a reg of mine and a friends design, just for laughs using a balanced shuttle valve.. We were having trouble with getting the HP seat to seal last time I pressurized it, but have since acquired some square section...

    DIY Weight Pouches?

I sewed some old net curtains into a whole bunch of pouches... different sizes, I doubled up the fabric so that I have 2 thicknesses (this is a pain but makes soft flexible conformable bags) then weighed out lead shot on my kitchen scales, and poured it in... then finished the holes in the top...

Looking For A Mask With A Better Field Of View

I'm finally getting annoyed with not having any peripheral vision while UW. I currently have a Sherwood mask, Can't remember which model maybe a Magnum 2 window, or an older model, I can look this up when I get home... Problem is I can't see any of my equipment unless I pull it into the FOV...

    DIY Lobster Snare

I was going to send a picture of my gloved hand, but I can't be bothered! Why do you need a snare? Can't dive for lobstahs up here anyways! Oh and you want gloves on up here! Water's a bit nippy! R

    Gosh %#@% power inflator valve!!!

I cut my wire intentionally and removed it, I see no need to manually dump by pulling the inflator. I have heard first hand horror stories of the whole inflator hose pulling apart because some ape pulled on it rather too hard, resulting in an uncontrolled descent, followed by a rather messy...
