Two issues with titanium that I forgot to mention. It is much harder than steel which also tends to make them more brittle. The edge is extremely hard but they cannot be tempered the same way steel can so a titanium is not so good for prying and things like that.
Titanium is the only known...
I carry a four inch knife, blunt tip, one serrated edge, titanium. It is a squeeze lock which clicks right into the BC sheath. Nice thing about the titanium is that I don't need to do much to it after a dive. My dive buddy and wife carries a set of trauma shears. I think the shears might be...
I've got one of these and it works pretty well. You do have to fully inflate your BCD to get it fully inflated. After that, it has a one way valve that keeps it full. I have not had to use it much but I like having it there.
To assemble it you have to unscrew the cap off of one of your...
A couple of people have contacted me wanting to know the names of the dive shops I had the problems with. I would really rather say that I have purchased some equipment from ScubaToys and they were great. I have also had very positive experiences with Scuba Systems in Skokie IL. I got my...
Thanks for the info. It seems that FFM is a fairly new specialty course and most instructors that I know seem to know very little more than me about them. I would like to try one some time so I suppose it is best to try some pool drills to see how the change goes. It just seems slightly more...
I've got a question about using a full face mask. Do you carry a normal octo for alternate air source ? Do you have a standard scuba mask in case you have to remove the full face ? How hard is it to switch to an alternate air source ?
I personally bought one tank that I use locally and it is nice to have at home to check out my gear. I can check out the BCD, flush out regulators (which is better to do when they are pressurized), and make sure that the batteries are good in the air integrated computer I use. I would not buy...
I want to thank Phil Mintz of Mares for his assistance today. I went to my LDS and ordered a Proton Metal V42 and Proton Octo. The LDS called and said that the regs were not going to be available until some time next month. I sent a PM to Phil on Scubaboard and received a response and phone...
I don't think I am slamming the concept of the LDS. I am just tired of hearing the mantra of supporting your local LDS or else.
The idea of their not being instructors or air fills is just a scare tactic. The market will ensure that if you need air, someone will be in business to sell it to...
ScubaToys seems like a good example of an Internet business that provides more than price. I see the ownership online giving advice and being a part of the community. They also have a brick location for those lucky enough to be close enough.
I hope I did send a message regarding ScubaToys...
Well, I have tried three LDSs in the area and have browsed several others. From this sampling I can put them into two categories. Small guys that have no selection and big guys was seem pretty arrogant. If I have to travel a zillion miles to find a good guy then he is not exactly local...
Well, to answer some of the questions. This is two LDSs and I have not had any real confidence inspired by some other around here either. The first LDS with the faulty rental gear actually does have a pretty extensive service department and the word is that they are good at that. They are a...
I have not been a member her efor very long but I have noticed the long running debate on internet vs LDS purchasing. I thought maybe I could add something since I am a fairly new diver and have formed some definite opinions on this.
1. During open water training, our class was provided...
I have a set of these. They seem to give a lot of power but are a bit tiring to use. They have so much bite that it just takes a lot of power to use them. The straps and the feel are pretty nice. One thing I did not like was the snap down buckles, to me they seemed harder to use that just...
