I don't know what prices are like given the cost of fuel these days but what I felt was a good trade off for the cost of getting there was the fact Bonaire is not an expensive place once you are on the island. I.e., if you are going to do the shopping and cooking yourselves like we did (twice)...

You might be the only guy who has a problem with how other people choose to plan and execute their dives. I am sorry to hear that watching other divers start off with a surface swim ruined your vacation. :(

my wife and I have been to Bonaire twice. Both of us wore Akona Titaniums without any problems cutting or bruising our feet. The coral never bothered us and we didn't have any traction problems. We didn't dive the park or the East Side so maybe those places are where these tender footed...

Sounds good. I didn't mean to imply you wouldn't like diving in New England, just that I myself wouldn't make any big financial outlays on equipment without getting wet first.
