    Buying some equipment

With the amount of dives y'all have I might recommend waiting a bit before you buy a lot of gear. There are a lot of different styles and kinds of equipment out there and it helps to try some of them out and get a feel for what you like and what kind of diving you're gonna do. My gear...

    What wasn't covered well enough...

I'd add the team concept to what's already been listed. a buddy should be more than emergency gas and another pair of eyes. A

    Salvo light question

ok, light was green with no battery attached, but turned red after i ran the light in the tub for a while. Wasn't expecting the battery to ship fully charged and I was expecting the light to turn from green to red when charged like my old halcyon light. Problem solved. Thanks all. A

Should the light be green even if the battery isn't attached to the charger? A

    Salvo light question

Just got my new 21w li-Ion can light and it did not come with a manual. For those of you who have one, how do I know when the battery is done charging? Is there anything I should know about caring for the light? Thanks. A

Suit thickness for 19-23 C water?

I wear a 5/4 even in warm waters and have never been uncomfortable. Don't think you can go wrong with a 5mm.

    Body Type

Speaking from a medical perspective (or at least a medical student's perspective) it's not necessarily the fat that would get you, but the complications stemming from the added stress that the fat puts on your body, ie high BP, high cholesterol etc all adding stress to a heart that is already...

    Your most useful accessory...

Gotta go with the drysuit (at least till I get my can-light). When my wet buddies complain about the cold, I just smile. On the whole though I think the best "accessory" is having as few accessories as you can. I've been a lot happier since I switched to the dark side and minimized my gear...

    What a disappointment

DIR/F isn't so much an introduction to DIR with the intent of raising interest as it is a class to teach the skills that GUE deems necessary to better diving. It's the difference between familiarization and instruction. You are correct that most divers taking DIR/F can't meet the standards the...

    What a disappointment

Well said. I would add that there is a well thought-out REASON for all of the rules and regs that GUE embraces and that they are not excluding smokers (or anyone for that matter) simply to have a no-smoking club. You may disagree with their reasoning and choose to go another route, but it is...

    Beyond Open Water...

Personally I would make nitrox my next cert if I were you. In addition to allowing you to dive an arguably better gas at the depths you'll probably be diving straight out of OW, it'll give you much more of an in-depth education into diving physics and physiology than you'll be getting in an OW...

    are double 80's dangerous?

I think the biggest danger is that doubles will make it easier for you to blow through your no-deco time and end up in a deco situation since you're not gonna have the added check of worrying about how much gas you have left. That said, if you are any kind of conscious diver this shouldn't be a...

    Can-light opinions

Howdy all. I'm starting to look at buying a can-light. I've pretty much fixed on Salvo for brand, but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions (hopefully based on firsthand experience) on NiMH vs Li-Ion batteries, and 21w vs the new 35w HID lights. The brighter light is tempting (I'd love a...

    tank size

Hey all. I'm looking at putting a together a set of steel doubles and was wondering what size tank most people get. I'm looking to be versitile here for tech, cave, and recreational dives. I'm looking mainly at the LP 95s or 105ish (i've seen 104, 105 and 108 in this range). Thanks. A

    wet suit help

I wear a speedo (the one with the legs on it, not the briefs). You may get some ribbing for it, but they are MUCH more comfortable than trunks. They are also very good motivation for staying in shape, particularly when diving in a coed environment.

    Split fin query

The only downside to these (and all splits) that I have personally found is that they don't turn as well as a paddle-style fin like a Volo. That said, the XTs are great and I thought they were more manuverable that the other splits I've tried. A

    Hose Question

Thanks guys. That pretty much answers my question. I'm guessing wrapping around the can-light will leave just as much slack as the waist-pocket. I even tried routing it up under the knife and it still was just too long. Tucking it worked just fine, but is harder to clean up after an S-Drill...

    Order of importance

Lets not forget here that as long as you rent a suit, you are renting something that someone else has relieved themselves in. May not matter to you, but it bugs some people. If I had it to do over again I'd probably get the suit first and a computer next. The computer is gonna dramatically...

    Hose Question

Howdy all. I have a hose question. I just got back from a quarry where I was trying out my new MK25 reg that came with a 7' hose. I am a short guy (5'6") and the hose swallowed me whole. I tried wrapping it around my waist pocket (don't have a can light yet) like I did the 6' hose I had on...
