    Apeks Transmitter Flooded

as stated previously, I still carry a gauge. Call me silly, but I’m reluctant to trust anything that contains a replaceable battery 100%. The transmitter failure didn’t stop me from getting a great week of diving in. I understand this is something that can happen when playing in the briny...

    Apeks Transmitter Flooded

Plenty of dives with no problems prior to the battery change. as stated earlier in the thread, my home dive shop said they’d make it right. I’m not worried about that. posed the question more to find out how widespread this problem is. I’d agree: battery change in this unit seems pretty...

    Apeks Transmitter Flooded

Great insight! Thank you. I experienced no OPV failure. I’m 59 and my eyesight isn’t what it once was. As I hotwash this, I think the computer told me there was a problem (one yellow bar warning, one red bar warning) near the end of dive #2 Sunday, but I was unable to read the text included. It...

    Apeks Transmitter Flooded

Thanks for sharing that experience. My home dive shop has said they’ll fix this, and I have confidence in that statement. I’m glad I have a back-up gauge in my system, so I’m not going to lose any dives. Using the i770R, have you noticed the wonkiness when there’s a firmware update?

    Apeks Transmitter Flooded

Has anyone experienced a flooding incident with their Apeks MH-8A transmitter? Battery was changed and the unit pressure tested at my local dive shop last month when my reg was in for service. I got two salt water dives in on Sunday with no issues, but when I was setting up my gear for my...

    DC 600 Digital Strobe Issue

Actually, it's a different component. Open the lid (carefully... not like I did after riding in the hold pressurized it making opening it a battle, which led to the issue in the 1st place) of the SL961 and you'll see a wiring harness that runs from the rheostat (flash intensity adjustment knob)...

    DC 600 Digital Strobe Issue

Hiya folks! I've broken the wire harness from the flash intensity control on my digital strobe at the connection to the control. Is this user servicable (as in replacing the old harness with a new one that I order from you)? If not, what must I do to return my strobe to service? Thanks! John

Carrying a Marine VHF radio while diving?

I've never carried one or seen one carried. Are they even water resistant @ depth? The signaling devices I usually have with me on a dive include a whistle, 2 CDs epoxied together (cheap but effective mirror), a safety sausage or SMB and a little AAA-powered strobe.

    Mares quality

I'll have to second Georoc01's comments on the Mares Alikai: My wife loved her's in the store, but the 1st one we purchased required replacement after 4 dives because the integrated weight system (not just the pouch) fell apart. She's had a few other small failures on the replacement (she'll...

    Sosua Dom Republic dive report

A friend of mine will be flying into Santiago, DR on Feb 23 and leaving Feb 26th, but would like to sample some of the local diving while he's there. He's PADI open-water certified but it's been a year since he's been under the water, so he'd benefit from a skills review. Any suggestions on a...

What Gear to take on a Plane Trip

No one's mentioned it previously, but one last thing to bring is a recently printed copy of the TSA regulations relating to traveling with scuba gear. I once met a well-intentioned screener who was initially hesitant to allow my regulator to travel in my carry-on because my 2nd stage wasn't...

    What Did You Self-Teach Yourself?

I purchased a dry suit and read the section in the PADI AOW book, but didn't take a class. So far, so good. I love how it extends my dive season here in balmy western NY. Everything I've learned about underwater photography I've learned by applying what I've learned about land photography...

    Tools confiscated by Mex. TSA

I've found it useful to keep recent copies (usually printed the day before my scheduled travel) of the TSA regs relating to whatever potentially-objectionable items I might have in my carry on. A couple years ago, I met a well-meaning screener who didn't want to let my regulator onto the...

    Key West Dive Ops

I've been diving with LOST REEF ADVENTURES when in Key West for the last few years. My last trip to Key West, they even went over & above to get folks together to take the boat out for my wife & I because we were returning customers on what happened to be a slow day. We've always had good luck...

    Rescue Diver?

Exitandleave, First off, welcome to Scubaboard! Nice to have you here. In my experience the didactic information and practical skills presented in your Rescue Diver program are as much about safe dive planning and self-rescue as being there for your fellow divers. If you have the time, I...

How to use a safety sausage (SMB)?

DAN had a pretty thorough piece on SMB deployment and safety in their Alert Diver publication last spring. The article might be available for download from DAN Divers Alert Network. I've tried to get into the practice of deploying my SMB on every dive, usually when I'm heading for my safety...

What dive equipment to travel with?

I'm not so good in HTML... what I meant to say was: SUITCASE fins, snorkel wet suit, boots, gloves SL8 LED dive light reel, knife weightbelt, BC pouch w/strobe, scissors, mini-pocket mask clothes for trip, shaving kit logbook CARRY ON DUFFEL regulator, octo, SPG BP/W w/SMB, Mask SL4 LED...

What dive equipment to travel with?

I haven't found an airline yet that didn't charge for a bag carrying scuba gear, but anecdotally, some airlines treat scuba gear the same as golf clubs (i.e, "sporting equipment") and don't charge... or at least used to. I've gotten fairly adept at getting my gear to wherever I happen to be...

    Batteries for the DC600

I haven't experienced battery performance as poor as you've described yet, but I'll watch for it. My DC600 is set to shut down after a minute of inactivity. While I think it helps conserve my batteries for a 2 tank dive, it does sometimes limit my ability to get shots of some of the cooler...
