Retiring Tanks based on age alone

I don't have much of a problem with the older aluminum, as long as they are used "on condition." that means that they pass all required testing and are in general good shape - BTW, I did get rid of all of my old aluminum tanks a while ago as 1) I don't need the old aluminum debate when I am out...

Anyone use Small Doubles for Recreational Dives??

Vintage steel 72's are just about neutral at 500 psi, so with ether 1 or 2, they are not all that bad, it is getting your weight correct that is the key. Remember, twin steel 72's had been dove for over 20 years before the BC was even invented. With only a T-shirt and shorts, I am fine with...

Is it crazy to wear a hood with a shorty?

The old saying is "If your feet are cold, put on your hat" fits this question. Other considerations are that a hood can keep long hair under control or protect your head if you don't have much on top (my problem).

    Kirby Morgan rust

A hot Nitric acid bath will remove the iron and also passivate the surface, this is what I do for titanium and aluminum after steel shot peening. As for the 6 hours of driving, FedEx ground will cost you about as much as, if not less than, the drive when you factor in the tolls and gas etc...

Proper hose management when using pony bottles.

Besides the hoses all over the place, which are an entanglement hazard, and just makes you look like a mess and uncool, you do now have a 2nd stage management issue with a primary, octo, and pony reg. The management issue is ‘Which Reg/Tank am I on right now?’ We lost a few divers...

    72's Scuba Tanks

You would be surprised at what the Coast Guard can do when they want to. For a while they didn't want any boats heading out to the Andra Doria and would stop boats just after they left the dock for a Safety Inspection, as they are allowed to do by law. On a few trips they checked every bottle on...

    72's Scuba Tanks

With a liner they are most likely made between 1969 and 1972. The liners came in a light cream color and a dark red or brick color. As long as the liner is in good shape and not flaking it should be good to go. The hazard is that there may be some rust pitting under the liner that you need to...

    Boat diving questions

This thread has so far been mostly Southern Cal diving as you are from AZ, as one poster said the Great Lakes is a bring your own stuff diving and the US East Coast is also bring your own stuff, even water. On the East coast there are not many large boats except for some Florida, North Carolina...

    Old Aqualung part

Go to the vintage double hose, join the discussion list and ask there. I am sure that someone has a few of them in their parts boxes.

What would recommend as a path to Wreck Diving in the North East and Great Lakes?

I have been diving the 853 for 30 years and know the in's and outs of that sub and have gone through all the hatches with the exception of the engine room and crews quarter escape hatches, with double 72's, 80's, or100's (the escape hatches or just too narrow for me). But, I have seen a good...

    Wreck Diving Gloves?

For wreck diving, I considered gloves to be expendable, you just use them up on the sharp edges if you do any digging or work. Because of this I have never used dry gloves, even in 32F water doing boat salvage in February/march in New England. I do look for a glove with good puncture resistance...

    old aluminum

As Luis said it is an aluminum 72 and was know as a "floater" due to the boyancy of the tank. But some cave divers like them for stages because of the buoyancy. As it has very little use, you should have no problem getting it past hydro but getting it filled will be a shop by shop problem.

USS Tarpon - submarine off NC

Atlantis in Morehead City used to head up there a few times a summer but Hatteras is the closest port.

    Underwater Archaeology

Any Archaeology course given by NAUI, PADI, or any other dive agency will get you nowhere with the governmental or academic crowd. This is because the quality of the instructor is unknown, quality as in their knowledge of archaeology. In my 35 years of diving I have never met a SCUBA instructor...

Do you need to keep old vis stickers on a tank.

I think you should take the stickers off every now and then, these two were on two steel 72's that I had in the back of the garage. I stripped the stickers and paint off of them and made them into a nice set of doubles for a friend. Do you think I left them on long enough?

    O2 Clean a Steel Tank

I would also add that tumbling is an on condition operation, not a requirement for O2 cleaning. In other words tumbling is only required when there is a lot of rust and rarely required on an aluminum tank.

    CT divers

My first mix dive was in 1993 before a mix card was invented and was using NITROX and O2 for deco starting around 1991 or so. - so I do know the ins and outs of mix and deco. But I do not buy into any "right" way of diving, it is up to the diver to know their abilities and the requirements of...

    CT divers

I come from the "old" days when I used to play around in the engine room all the way back to the control room hatch on air - I called the hatch to the control room "A Hatch Too Far" as it only opens to 90 degrees and is a very tight squeeze, I only know of one or two who have ever passed through...

The Bass is a Trimix only wreck now? I must have missed the change over. Rick Simon told me that he was out on the Suffolk a few weeks ago and the stern had collapsed and the prop was now in or just above the sand. When the prop went it took the rudder with it.

Current: How fast is too fast?

People over estimate the current that they can keep up with all the time, ask a Lifeguard sometime. A diver striped for the islands can work for a while in 1 knot, the "a while" being dependent on their physical fitness. Unless you swim a lot, like every week or more, swimming in 1 knot for more...
